The New Driving Law

There is a new law about having your hands on the wheel at all times.  No phones or eating anything.  The only thing you’re allowed to do is change gears or to change the radio station.  So from now on, you’re not allowed to take your hands off of the wheel while you are driving.

Same with riding your bike on the road.  You have to have your hands on the handlebars at all times, no excuses.  I do not like this law because I have a really bad habit of riding my bike with one hand on the handlebars that is really hard to get out of.  You can also get a major fine for not obeying this law.  I think we shouldn’t have to do this.

What do you think of these statements?

  1. I agree with you willywonka. I even do the bike part sometimes. It is a dumb law but it is a law

  2. I must confess that before the Distracted Driving law came into force that I've texted a time or two at a red light. Now I force myself to ignore my phone until I am fully parked. It was tough at first but now I realize there's really nothing that urgent that can't wait until I arrive at my destination.

Back in the "olden days" before cell phones were even in existence, people used to go merrily along their way without being "on call" at all times of the day. Let's try relaxing and concentrating on the task at hand.

The law seems a tad rigid to me but I understand its purpose. Let's remember that many people complained about having to wear seatbelts many years ago and now most would feel weird without it on.

  3. hey willywonka do you think that laws are weird.yes they are sometimes but not when you start obeying them.do you know that in my country there is a law saying PUT YOUR SEATBELT.but none of us obey this.it is not difficult to obey them once you start obeying them.there is also a law saying THAT BOTH HANDS SHOULD BE ON THE STEERING.example how to obey this law is do not bring any i pods or any eatables or anything that attracts your hands.this is how you obey this law.so obeying a law is not difficult untill you obey them atleast once.so i say that some are annoying but some are easy to obey

  4. I agree with the Big HAM that just because you can ahold of some one at all times doesn't mean it's always a good thing.

I have a friend who always says "Be where you are". I think it is good advice. If you are driving you should be focused on doing that. If you are reading focus on that. If you are doing something with a friend focus on that. If you are texting someone focus on that.

    Be where you are.

  5. I'm with you on that willywonka. Whenever I bike, sometimes I use one hand to change my ipod or something. But really, not even at a red light???? Thats ridiculous! I mean, 172$$$$ dollars for changing my ipod? No thanks!!

The only thing I agree about is not being able to eat or drink behind the wheel. People always complain about how people drive around with their phone up to their face. Eating or drinking is just as dangerous because when you drink water or something, the bottle gets in front of your face so you can't see.

My point has been proved. :)

  6. You're right I think they shouldn't have to put this law out there in the first place , but our city gives driver licences out like they put them in cracker jack boxes or you can get one in the Tim Horton's drive through "here's your coffee and your free driver licence have a nice day!"

  7. I get why they put that law on about cars but I don't get why they would make that law about bikes? I don't like that law just because of that, but it's a law I can't do anything about it. IT SO WEIRD!!!!!

  8. Same thing with me I have a habit of riding my bike with only one hand. It is going to be really hard not to ride with only one hand. But other wise I think it's safe because there are a lot less car crashes. You can just wait until you reach your destination or you can just pull over. Because would you rather have to pay a ticket or read a text?

  10. Willywonka,
I don't agree with the biking law. But I do agree with the driving law. It just makes the roads at least a little bit safer. I almost always ride my bike with one hand. And what if you have to scratch yourself.

  11. I do not agree with this law, even if you are waiting for the light to change you're not allowed to text. But if you are driving you should have all attention to the road. So I agree half and half with this law.

  19. I agree to the DRIVING LAW but not the bike law. What if you got a call from school or the police or got a text from your teacher or your church leader? What if you need water because you swallowed a fly? Why can't you? But if I really hate this law, I would complain to Stephen Harper, only if it really efects me.Everybody hates the new law. To me I really think it is not bad. Till now, peace

  20. I agree, this law shouldn't be in law (couldn't find any thing good to say there). I mean, sure, if want to follow it you can, but isn't it more efficient to multi task, like, say that if you were late for work and you couldn't eat breakfast, and this is a really important board meeting, and you have to go through the Tim Hortans drive through, now you can't even eat!

I mean, don't get me wrong, I prefer not to die while I'm driving, but still, do they have to crack down on this so much, I mean, in Edmonton has had over 30 murders in this year alone, what have you the police doing about that! Sorry that I ranted, but still.

  21. I think it is unfortunate that the law was applied to bikes as well as cars. Too many people are distracted when driving cars for sure, but to say the same for bikes does not make sense to me. It makes the law seem petty and without common sense.

  22. I for one have to say I agree with this law, for example one person could be talking or texting on the phone, not keeping focus on the road. That person is risking his or her life in danger and risking the passenger(s) in the car too. Not just putting the people in danger in the car you might be putting the people in danger on the sidewalk the person or car in front of you and the back of you also. One time mom and I saw on TV and a man was texting while driving a train and missed something i don't recall what it was but he didn't pull the lever and the train crashed. Most of the people died and only a few survived and I have to say it was sad but unfair for the people that died for something they didn't do. This is why they created this law and I say this will keep people safe on the road, sidewalk and tacks.

  23. I am from Forest 15, I think that the new driving rule has good things and bad things. I think the number 172.00 is weird. What about 170.00 instead
