The Grade Six’s Debate

First of all a debate is when two groups of people meet together and argue about any kind of topic they want.  The topic can be something important to the world, country, province, city, neighborhood, park, or school.  For example, they could debate that the provinces should have MEGA SCHOOLS that go from kindergarten to grade 12.  The two groups of people can also debate how much it would cost for the MEGA SCHOOLS how much room would it take or how long it would take to organize.  Those are examples of what a debate is, now let’s move on.

A couple of months ago grade six students went on a fieldtrip spending a week at the Legislature.  During the fieldtrip we did Mock Leg; Mock Leg is when we act out a meeting and debate just like the MLA’s (Members of the Legislative Assembly).  The grade six debated about banning cars once a month.  This law meant that nobody can use their own personal cars once a month; they can use public transportation like taxis, buses, and trains.  I’ll just say this one more time, people could not, REPEAT, could not use their own personal car once a month.

Each grade six student had to write something that says that this law is useful and good and something that is against the law and bad.  Many people that I knew were against this law for many different reasons.  For the people that are against this law here are some examples of bad things, people being late for work, not being able to make it to someone’s birthday, anniversary, special occasion, and most importantly a family EMERGENCY.  When we first decided to debate on banning cars once a month I was totally against it because what if someone can’t make it to an important family EMERGENCY.  Even though we had a script, it was a great debate.
Now, I’ve been talking about the bad things of this law here are some good things.  First of all if we had this law, it would cut back on pollution and that is a very good thing because believe it or not, pollution affects our world sixty-eight percent.  Another good thing is that if you use public transit, you can sit back and don’t even have to worry about the road; you can chat with the person beside you and make a new friend and also chat with your family.

Another debate we had at City Hall was, should we have more handicap parking?  I thought that it was a great idea and some people agreed but many chose to disagree.  Again there was a good debate; here are some of the good things they said, more people are getting disabled because of old age or other factors so it would help them if there were more reserved parking.  A bad thing was that, some argued that those people don’t even use the handicap parking; I disagreed because where ever I go I see handicap people using the parking stalls.

I can’t wait to see your opinions for both of these debates, see you later.

  1. What I have to say about this blog is that I have forgotten all about the debates at the Legislature and at City Hall. It was so much fun there, my favorite debate was at City Hall when it was about the handicap parking. The debate about handicap parking was a great idea, thats what I thought. It could help alot a people in wheel chairs and in cruches. I agree with Small Iahk that handicap parking will help a lot.

The debate at the Legislature was absolutley fantastic, except I didn't agree with this just like Small Iahk did. If we had this law peple would be late for work, birthday parties, anniversary and most of all family emergency. But it could cut back on pollution and that is important, and people can start jogging once a month or go on a bike ride with you're family and have a picinic.

  2. Thanks for the informative blog, Small Iahk. I didn't know your time at the Leg. was so intensive! It sounds like you learned a lot while you were there.

I'm glad to be able to share in the life of your group by reading your blog posts.

    Keep up the interesting posts!

  3. The debates were fantastic!

They were both really fun, but I liked the one at City Hall more because I was a councilor. I got to use a cool microphone and everything!! We debated whether or not there should be more handicap parking. I was against it at first, but at the end it was totally for it!

The Legislature was SUPER fun, and I had a great time. The Mock ledge was cool, because we got to dress up. The first time I was on the government side, and the second time I was a page (a person who get water for MLA's.) Both parts were really cool.

But in other words, both of the debates were really fun!!!!

My point has been proven! ;D

  4. Awesome!!!!

That is really cool. (THE WHOLE DEBATE THING) So, I have a question for YOU. My question is, are these debates still going on or was this like an asigned school project/ field trip?
Another question is were you really tempted to get out a curly white wig? I know I would be. l.o.l!!

This sounds really fun! Personally, I love the idea of a debate because you get to speak freely and say your side of the story.
I think that there should be a school debate team just for fun.

I like the idea of more handicap parking spots and mega schools. I think that there should be mega schools because after elementary school you go to junior high and then you lose half of your friends. I like the handicap idea because if there are no handicap stalls left, the handicap person has to park farther away.

    Nice blog!!!

  5. I think that MEGA SCHOOLS would be awesome! If I could go to the same school form K-12, it would be awesome! The only problem would be ALL THE TRAFFIC. It would be complete TORTURER trying to get to the school. And seriously, how big would this school BE.

That no car law I think would be HORRIBLE. It would be mayhem, EXTREME MAYHEM on the sidewalks. It would be a waste of electricity to keep the traffic lights going all day long with no traffic going through them.

  6. My opinion about the first debate at the Legislature was absolutly fantastic. But at first I was agaisnt it because of people being late for many important reason like an important emergency. But once the fieldtrip was over and my mom and wacth a movie "The Day After Tomorrow" then I was half and half for the debate. Once I wacthed the movie it really change my mind because of pollution. Although the movie was not real event but it could happen and it's pretty scary for the world and for the people. That movie change my mind.

The debate at City Hall was something I could agree with from the very start. I mean if we had more handicap parking it will help so much more, because everytime I go with my mother to get groceries I see handicap people not able to park close to the store. The handicap people are going to the store from the other side of the parking lot. Seeing handicap people parking far away get out of there car get their wheel chair and go to the store does not please me at all.

  7. There are better topics than this but I will say I wanted to talk to a reporter so now I hate mock leg.
    leave it to the masters.

  8. I think that that if we banned the cars for 1 day of the month everyone would go crazyyyyyyyyy, as like me because then I would have to take the bus to my friends house, and the bus would be SOO crowded since everyone couldn't drive there own car!!

And I also when I go to a store I barely ever see anyone use them so I think that we should keep the same amount of handicap spots for a few years or so!

    Well SEE YA LATER

  9. I think that would be a terrible law to pass over. Because, what would happen if you needed to go to the library or if it was time to go get a birthday present. Also what would happen if one of your family members died. Than that would be stupid. I do think that you did a great job on the blog post.
    See ya

  11. Being at the Alberta Legislature was really fun that week.

For the first time we did the Mock Legislature, I was the Sargent-At-Arms. It felt pretty good to have an important position in the Mock Leg. The only thing I didn't like about that one was the topic we were talking about. I wish we had a topic that actually had purpose instead of a topic of a law that no one would even agree with even if it went through to the real Legislature. Maybe some of the people did like that topic (otherwise we wouldn't have even talked about it) and actually thought it was a good idea because it was their idea. But I didn't really want to talk about it. The second time that we did it, it went a little bit more smoother because it was the second time we did it.

Other than that, I really like being at the Legislature.

  12. Actually, there is no need to organize something with the city because there are already MANY k-12 schools, in fact my brother, my brother actually goes to a school like that (Victoria school of the arts). Sure there are more split schools, but still, why bother have a bunch of teens with a bunch of scared kids worrying if the 8th graders are going to take mr.teddy.

And about the city hall debate, that what MY idea, and you wanna know what my position in the moc hall was, hmm, do ya, I was a journalist who didn't say a word. That's so, so, so... alright I don't have a term appropriate for a school blog post.

  13. I really enjoyed all of the debates. I thought they were very informative. The one I probably liked the most was the one about the more handicap parking spaces. I said that I was with the idea because what if there are no other spaces and the ONE handicap spot was taken.

The other one I liked was the one where one day in the whole month nobody used cars. I liked it because it would reduce pollution and there would be less nose. The downside of it was if there was an emergency? What would they do?

    That's my thought.

  14. I loved the debate it was fun to be the page but the saddest part is that I had no part to speak. But the second time we did the mock ledge I got to be the chairman so it was more fun than the first one. But it was more fun after that. We got to go around the building.
We had a lot of fun!! or did we(just kidding)!!

  15. Going to the legislature sounded pretty fun. Too bad I could not go.
It would have been fun to argue about some thing that most people do not really care about[ not so much actully not so much once I think about it].

I agree that not being able to ride a car once a month would cut back on pollution but not that much. Think about how much pollution wold be created between the day after people can not drive their car and the next day people can not drive their car. It would cut back even more on pollution If people can not drive their car ever Sunday.

  16. going to the legislative would be pretty nice. Too bad I didn't go. Well there is always next year. I agree about that there should be more handicap parking. What if we had a really bad snow storm and someone who was handicap had to park really far away from the place they want to go. Instead they would have to park like a block away. That is why I say that there should be more handicap parking.

I think that there should not be once a month were we are not aloud to drive our vehicles. Once again I am using the snow storm example. For example my grandpa just finished having surgery. What if by the time he got out there was snow up to his knees. He would be having a hard time walking to the vehicle. I know that he would not be able to drive. But when someone goes to pick him up how would he get to the vehicle. That is why I say there should not be one time a month where we are not aloud to drive.

  17. First of all the mock leg was awesome I had so much fun doing that. Second of all I didn't agree at first because I didn't know exactly what they where trying to say about a CAR BAN. But after the mock leg I agreed and the best thing about the moc leg was the talking I got to be a part of the opposing side witch was fun. Then after that I got to be the camera man witch was fun. And that is what I thought about the Legislature and I am exited to read what the other kids think.

  18. I am not ready for the legislative but I went in and it was amazing. But I saw a two hobos and one was peeing and one was sleeping. I saw blood near a statue and saw blood on the footsteps. That is why there is a lot of police on the roll near the building. But other wise I liked it and there was like no parking spots.

Inside I can not even explain how beatiful it is.
