All year I have tried to talk to my students about some current events in Alberta that may be of importance to them. We focus mainly on news stories such as government changes, fossil finds and the occasional tragedy.
Growing up my family had a newspaper subscription to the Edmonton Journal and we always watched the 6 o'clock news. I didn't have access to the Internet so if I wanted to see what was happening in the world I had to read the newspaper or watch the news.
Students today have the luxury of news on demand. That is, they can search up yesterday's news or even breaking news just by typing in a few keystrokes on the keyboard. With this kind of access then, it seems to me that kids would be caught up on all sorts of news in their community. A poll of my class though indicates otherwise which made me curious.
Do current events even matter to children these days? Are children more concerned with what celebrities and superstars are doing instead of what's happening right in their province? Why don't children access current events? Lastly, what has been the event that has been most memorable this year?

Current events are most definitely important, just not for me. I don't watch the news because for me as a kid it's not that important. But I bet that when I am older I will be watching a lot of the news about my job maybe.
ReplyDeleteMy most memorable news moment is probably the bus driver incident. It caught my attention because it was Cunningham which is my bus company so my parents were worried which made me worried but than the talking about it faded away.

Current events matter to me because some of them are really tragic like that police officer that died from a gunshot and it was very sad for his family. People should kind of care about these things because the police try really hard to protect us and our cities.

Current events sort of matter to me. Most of them do not affect me. But some things do have a rather large impact on my life. I think people should care about current events because they can change your life.
ReplyDeleteThe only times I get access to the news is when I'm driving to school, when the radio is on. So I usually don't know what's happening unless it would effect me. Then my mom tells me all about it. I don't like to listen to the news on T.V because I once walked by the T.V when the news was on and something bad came on T.V and it scared me for life and is now glued in my head for eternity!!! The only time I go on the internet is to play games, watch YouTube, do research, or work on schoolwork.
The event that has truly affected me is the murder of a police officer, the time around his death and final goodbye, my mom was terribly stressed and sad. She knew that man, so it makes her want to cry. Her in a sad mood affected me, also. It made me sad and my mom behaved different. This event truly affected my life.

No current events do not matter to me that much. They do not matter to me because I do not have a TV but sometimes I do wrede that much.

First of all current events DO matter to me. Why you ask? Well they are happening usually in MY country and sometimes even in MY province. Well I don't own it but I live in it. I think we should care because if its bad then that is happening to real people! Thats scary (sometimes.). And if its something good it could be happening to someone you know!

I don't know why but I never get News papers! The only time I can read (not watch) about news and see it is : 1. My grandpa Jody and Grandma Chickis house 2. My kokum and muchums house. 3. the store I can see the cover of a magazine.
The event hat has the most effect on me is when NDP won government. It affects me because they make the rules of Alberta and that's where I live. Well thanks for reading!!!

Current events do matter to me because some of them could effect your life in many ways or sometimes they don't but you should care. If you don't care then why what if something happened to you or your family RIGHT NOW. Do you know about the police officer that died two weeks ago, he got shot and died. Another police officer got shot but did not die he is/was in the the hospital now he is okay.
ReplyDeleteI cant see the news because I don't have cable but I do watch NETFLIX and YOUTUBE mostly YOUTUBE because I have a WII U and for some reason people love ''the Orange is the New Black" so people with WII U's cant get on to Netflix. But for some reason on my WII I can and my mom's computer. I also listen on my radio.

Yes, in fact current events matter quite a bit to me. But I do care about celebrities too. I care about current events because I find them interesting. I should know about this because it is what's happening around me. Well at least that is what my father told me he told me that it's important to know what is happening around you.
ReplyDeleteWhen I have free time at home I usually read, play or go on the computer. I also go watch TV watch YouTube. When I play on the computer I like to play on a site called coolmathgames.com. They have really cool math games on there. Like my favourites are papas burgaria, papas freezeria ect. The game is logic. You are suppost to try and feed all the custamers and make their food too.
The most memorable event for me was the woman in the shopping cart or the two men that are wanted in New York they might even be on Canadian soil! The two men broke out of jail. It is kinda creepy because know one has found them yet.

Yes some current events I care about. The reason why I care about current events is because when I heard about things that had happened in Canada I get nosey. Well I don't follow anything but I do hear a lot of things from my parents.

Yes, current events matter to me a bit but I only usually hear about the important events because the important events my friends or family tell me because I don't really hear about them on technology.

I'm not much of a "current event fan". It just isn't that interesting, even though I do watch the news every 'now and then', but sometimes it's repeats (hint hint t.v. guy, every hour it's on none stop). Anyways, why should I care? I'm still young (as in not in my 20's).

One event that was most memorable was when we had that huge government switch. Then last month everyone was supposed to submit a valet to chose a party or something? My parents didn't vote. But hold up.... were not Canadian Citizens, we came from Ireland, so we were NOT allowed to vote. It was memorable because in our classroom it's pinned right up against a billboard in our classroom(ha!).

It depends what the current event is. If it is about a fossil find I would watch it but if it is about a car accident I don't care about it. I don't care about what news is on.

I love watching news about video games and stuff like movie trailers and video game trailers and watching news about updates and stuff like new updates for Gta 5 and Cod and Halo and stuff. I watch that stuff because I like getting a sneek peep at games and movies and updates and all that cool stuff!
The most memorable event that has happend to me is when someone stole my dads car in March or somewhere around that. The reason why it is so important is because that was my dads stuff that costed a lot of money and when someone steals from my dad he gets mad!

Current events don't really matter to me that much. I think it's because if I look stuff up my parents consider it screen time, and I only get half and hour every day. Major boo! My parents also usually only listen to songs or the weather on the radio and my sisters use the newspaper for drawing material straight after my dad reads it.
ReplyDeleteSome of my favorite game sites are Cool Math Games and Games2Win. I also like listening to songs on YouTube when I work. It's entertaining. Sometimes, when I'm bored, I like searching random pics and printing them. By now, I have over 500! Literally.
One event that I can totally remember is when the NDP got elected. My mom was, like, totally surprised! Both my parents voted for her. Plus, my mom AND dad KNOW her! It feels kind of like we know a movie star!

Current events matter to me from Global Edmonton to watchmojo.com to Clevver (tv, movies, celeberities etc.). Because I like knowing what is happening. We should care about what is happening right now to help are knowleage.
ReplyDeleteI am interested in watching mojo.com and Clevver (those are both on Youtube! LIKE.). I watch Global because when I come to the kitchen to eat breakfast my dad is watching it and whenever the TV is on my eyes are peeled on it.

The most memorable event this year was the mass murder over Christmas. It was pretty tragic for me I mean 9 freak'in people died and then the guy who killed them committed suicied.

I don't care about about events yet. When I get older I will care about events but right now I don't care because I am just 10 years old. I don't need to care about stuff that adults need to care about. I like Youtube better I watch gaming videos.

Sometimes current events matter to me. They mostly matter to me when they are near my neighborhood or in it. I would be afraid if I found someone dead in my neighborhood. This year barely anything important happened in my neighborhood. I care if someone in my neighborhood got killed.

The most memorable event is when the NDP's got elected for the election. It was interesting because the PC's were in charge for so long now the NDP's get a turn.

Current events don't matter that much to me but its good to know about all the things that are happening. Most of the time the current events that happen aren't around my neighbourhood. My Grandma and Grandpa are into the news. My Grandma always tells me about the news.

I don't care about current events. They don't make sense in my opinion but if something happened in my area I would probably care but otherwise no I'm not very interested in news of any kind except news from my brother about Minecraft.

ReplyDeleteThe one website that I am really into is Lego.com, because I am a member of the Lego club, so I get the Lego Magazine and the and everything. The website gives you a lot of information as well as the Magazine. Some more sites that I go to are Tankionline and Minecraft exe. they are some sites where you play a game. One is one about tanks, and one is minecraft (obviously).
The three most memorable events was when the Lego club introduced three new themes, How Notch (Markus Persson) sold Mojang (minecraft, scrolls and more) for over A million dollars and the lady I SAW dead in a shopping cart. It was kind of weird.

Sometimes they matter other times they don't. My mom usually tells me what is going on in the world. I usually ask about the things that will bother me or include me.
ReplyDeleteAnd if I am not included I don't really care. For example the police man that died affected me a little but not much though. It affected me because my neighbor is a police officer so it looks like his house is a big blue ribbon and all of his fence is all blue even our fence is all blue.
To know about I don't always ask my mom because I actually like to watch the news in the morning. Sometimes I watch on my tablet and other times on the TV. My family watches Globalnews and if we miss that we watch CTV news.
The most memorable event is when my parents have to vote for the MVP
which was exciting for me!!!

Current events are a little bit important to me because I am only in grade four so, well it kind of effects me and other people. And I care because some of the events have been in my neigborhood so ya stuff like that.

The most memorable news or events was in Ormsby (aka my neighborhood ) because I live in that neighborhood and the police guy was killed by a psycho and destroyed a house and I remember that because I live around there so all that stuff.
