RECESS IN BAD WEATHER
Recess is an important break from the regular school routine, and gives students a chance to get fresh air and exercise. Schools will continue to have morning and afternoon recess breaks, even in bad weather so students should dress appropriately.
Students will only be kept inside during recess if:
- it is raining heavily,
- temperatures drop to -23 degrees Celsius
For a couple of weeks in December and through the first few days of this week, students have had to stay indoors yet again, because the windchill is greater than -23 degrees Celsius.
A lot of students enjoy staying inside for recess for a number of reasons. Some say it is tedious to get your winter gear on, some just do not like going outside and others do not have the proper winter gear to stay warm.
Although I admit that it is cold outside if one is not dressed properly, I also think that elementary students need the fresh air. Like our school secretary always says, by the time you get your winter gear on, it is really only five to eight minutes outside. If I could, I would take my class out for some fresh air, even during really cold weather.
It looks like the school board cancels recess when it is raining heavily, also. Although I understand that kids will get wet and it is uncomfortable to be in wet clothes, keep in mind that our previous principal used to say that the kids won't dissolve because they are not made of sugar.
What are your thoughts on indoor recesses? Do you think the school board should change their policies?

I like indoor recess because I don't like the cold.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite things to do is the tire swing, Grounders, slides and the swing. I also like sledding.
~slidegirl
I like indoor recess most of the time. Sometimes I do not enjoy indoor recess because it gets loud and you do not get to play the thing that you want to like running around.
ReplyDeleteI think that the school board should change its policy for the little kids. For them it should be -19 degrees Celsius but for us older kids, -23 degrees Celsius is fine. You should not complain if you are not dressed properly.
Some of my favourite summer games are running from the sun and water fights. My favorite games in the winter are snow ball fights and sledding. I also like coco snow.
~icecream lover
I HATE indoor recesses because its too hot in the school. I don't care if there's a tornado or a blizzard. I JUST NEED THE COLD. Since I'm sick I haven't been out for almost four weeks to play. It just makes me so bored to just sit and watch the snow fall. It's also super hot in my room and last night I had to put the fan to full and cover my nose so it wouldn't get stuffed when I woke up.
ReplyDeleteAnother reason why I hate indoor recesses is because kids can get a little out of control. It just gets so crazy sometimes I would rather stand at the beach and bore my eyes out(not because of the ocean and sand, because of the warmth ). Although if I go on a family vacation to somewhere warm, I would enjoy that much more than the cold. But otherwise,I don't like warm anything. Except hot showers,I LOVE those. I also love really cold water, I won't even drink room temperature water. I love the weather, and especially the snow because every year when it gets a warmer, me and my sister make awesome snow forts. This year I was planning to make a really fancy one with the rooms made out of igloos. My sister doesn't really know what to do. The best fort will win the last ice cream bucket. (I KNOW I WILL WIN)
I think the school board should change the policy because rain is just water. If you bring a umbrella you're safe. They should change the policy for indoor recesses too:
1.temperatures drop -32 degrees
If there is indoor recesses, the school should provide cupcakes, ice cream, cake, food, and electronics.
I like to play soccer with a couple of my friends in the winter and the summer. I also like to build forts if I'm alone.

It's not like I DISlike indoor recess, I just don't really like it. My thoughts on the matter: eh, I don't really care. Although being outside is cold,(unless you dress properly) what are you going to do inside?
ReplyDeleteI don't think the school board should change their policy, it's their choice, we just follow the rules. I don't have any thoughts of what they should change it to.
During the summer I love to sit on the steps and read, draw, talk, write, or find something to do with my friends. Winter, well.. I just stand there being very...still. It makes me more cold but I guess I never learn.

I don't angry with not going outside when the weather drops up to -23 degrees Celsius. I think we should not go outside when the weather drops up to -31 degrees Celsius.(especially when there is a tornadoes, sandstorms, volcanoes, hurricanes, and blizzards) I loooooooove the cold!! Winter is my favourite season.
ReplyDeleteI like it when it is snowing!
I think that the school board should change the policy a bit. I want to go outside most of the time just to breathe a little fresh air. Fresh air is healthy for your body especially if you are sick. At school I am staying in for recesses and I'm having headaches from staying in a room full of carbon dioxide. (the classroom).
I love recesses at winter because of the beautiful white snow. Everything is white and sparkly. I could build anything I want to build. Like a snow kitty!
~birdynumnum#1256
I do not like indoor recesses because we can always go outside. Imagine this you were going to school. You checked the weather it was -29 degrees Celsius outside. You dressed PROPERLY for the weather. You go outside because you dressed PROPERLY for the weather.
ReplyDeleteI think the school board should not have a limit for how cold it is until indoor recess. I think it is pointless to have indoor recess.
In the winter I enjoy building snow forts with my friends. I normally build the main parts. My friends normally build the parts that are not visited much.
~ConsumedCactus5
I like staying inside and outside. I really don't care because I just mostly care about being with my friends at recess. I guess I like indoor recess a little better only because we get to watch movies.
ReplyDeleteThe school board should change its policy. I think the policy should be -30 degrees Celsius until we go out because I love winter and we still need a little bit of fresh air.
My favourite recess is the lunch recess because it the longest. My favourite activities in summer and winter is acting with Diddley Squat in school.
~fungirl
I am okay sometimes with indoor recess because I do not like the cold but if it`s going too long I start to want to go outside.
ReplyDeleteI do not want the school board to change their policy because I am fine with the policy.
My favourite summer activities are playing with my friends and hide and seek. My faavourite winter activities are snow animals (snowmen too) and snow forts.
-puppydoggy84
I don't like inside recess because I don't get to play one of my favourite games and get fresh air or get active! But sometimes it is way too cold for me to even play but I still like outdoor recess and a little bit of inside recess.
ReplyDeleteI think that maybe or maybe not the school should change the policy because it's up to them to decide, but I do suggest to get inside recess about like -20 degrees Celsius or higher than that because I heard my dad say coldness could lead to bad illness or death. I don't know if it's true though.
Sometimes I like to play Grounders. I also love to make up new and fun games with my best friend. In the winter we also like to make snow forts and things with snow. In the summer we go to the swings and play in the playground. Sometimes if we're a little bored we play soccer on the field!
-tsumtsum
I dislike the rules. I love outdoor recess because then I can play soccer. I love soccer and I always win but you can't go out even at -23 degrees Celsius. We are not made of sugar are we? It's just stupid. It's not even cold at minus twenty three degrees. I could go out naked and jump out onto the snow and I wouldn't be cold. I love soccer so I want to go outside. Even if they say you're allowed but don't have to go out I'd be fine with that. So let it be outside recess.
ReplyDeleteI think it should really be minus 35-40 degrees out before we have to stay in. It should obviously change. Okay, maybe if you're 5-6 years old but seriously, Div 2 really.
Soccer Soccer Soccer and Soccer are my favourite sports at recess so let it be outside recess so I can play. This is for me. It's so fun and it's only rain so whatever.
~nonameguy
I like indoor recess because I don't like the cold. I wish that it was not cold outside. I will go outside even if it is cold. It was indoor recess from last year. Let me outside now!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYES, I think that the school board should change their policy to ice cream, ice cream.
~l8tercopper
I do like going outside better than staying inside but I wish no matter what we could go outside unless there is a tornado or a really big storm with thunder. I also dislike indoor recess because they are stupid and dumb. I love out doors. It is the best. I personally think that we should go out side for Phys. Ed. I LOVE OUT SIDE! It is awesome. It is the best. It`s amazing. I wonder if I can go outside.
ReplyDelete~snoopy2
I like indoor recess because we sometimes watch movie, and I like outdoor recesses too because we get to play in the snow, sand pit and playing in the playground.
ReplyDeleteNo, they should not change the policy because if its cold outside we should stay in and if some people want to go outside we should let them go outside while the rest of the people stay inside and watch movie.
Some of my favourite activity outside are the glider, tire swing, grounders, Monkey bar, plug the toilet, sledding, snow fort, jungle jim, rolling down the hill and sand fort.
~puppylover
I like indoor recesses because we get play games and read. And we get to watch a movie.
ReplyDeleteThey should change the policy because it could go to -27 degrees Celsius and i still dress warm.
My favourite winter activity is building snow forts. And I also build a lot of snowmen and kick them down one by one.
~thing1
I want to go outside even when it is pouring really bad. It is so fun to go outside to play but right now I can't go outside because we have to stay inside because it is too cold. Some kids doesn't have snow pants but outside some kids bring sleds.
ReplyDeleteSome kids share their sleds with their friends. Even kids who ask, even kids who are just siting there. They are so nice. I like to go on the tire swing.
~spark
I like indoor and outdoor recess because indoor you can relax and play when it's warm inside. Outdoor is also fun, because you can play and do lots of stuff like get warm
ReplyDeletewhen you are running around and you can talk lowd and do more stuff you like to do.
The policy should be that you can go outside when it is -20 degrees Celsius or lower with the windchill but if it is more then -20 degrees Celsius you should go inside.
I like playing soccer and I like walking and talking and hanging out with my friends.
~kitkatsmitsmat
I love indoor recess because we get to watch moves and play board games and sometimes even read. Why I say sometimes is because they turn off the lights and my mom says it's bad for your eyes to read in the dark.
ReplyDeleteI think the school should change the policy but only for the rainy days because I like hunting for worms.
My favourite recess activities are sleeping on the bench, reading on the monkey bars, and playing grounders.
-gracie1on1
I hate it so much indoor recess because I will not be able to play soccer outside. I'm soccer crazy. People know that a lot. I love getting fresh air and running so that's why I love outdoors and not indoors as much.
ReplyDeleteI think the policy should be changed because it's boring to be inside unless we go to the gym or do something fun. I think we should go outside no matter what.
My favourite activity is Soccer Soccer and Soccer. Not really anything else I can think of in Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter. I don't care. I just play soccer because I'm crazy you should already know.
~Bob The Unicorn
I hate indoor recess because it smells terrible and it is so boring. It also makes me get tummy aches and also you can't do anything.
ReplyDeleteI think the policy should be if its over -900000000000000000 you can stay inside. It also should be nobody stay inside even for detention.
I like playing soccer and murderer and I also like running outside except in school you aren't allowed.
~thedumbcow
Indoor recess is cool. I have fun. I love indoor recess. I like when the grade sixes come in our class but I don't like when my brother's girlfriend comes in. I don't like her. She is annoying and she punched me in the face.
ReplyDelete~thedump
I like recess because you get to watch movies and be happy.
ReplyDeleteThe school board should change their policies.
it shod be -30 to stay in shid.
I like to play tag or the tire swing.
~pokemon
I like indoor recces because I wont get cold and freeze and get sick and i do not like to get sick or get cold and I like to watch movies.
ReplyDeleteI think the policy should be -27 degrees Celsius.
I like to do parkour and to slide, help birdynumnum#1256 build her fort, guard and play soccer and play with my friends.
-soldier boy
I love the outdoors but instead we have to stay inside and I think that's pretty stupid because outside and coldness is better than indoors.
ReplyDeleteI think that the policy should be when the temperature is -39 to go outside and 39 degrees Celsius to go inside.
I like to annoy people sometimes at outdoor recess and play grounders,on the tire swing, play with my Grade 6 friend, and play with my Grade 3 friends.
-videogameboy
I like indoor recesses because I don't have to go outside. Also because I have to put my jacket on. I also like it because I get to watch movies sometimes. And I hate going outside because is cold outside in the winter.
ReplyDeleteI think the school board should change its policy to -5 or-10 because last year it was never cold enough to stay inside. Also I never wear snow pants because I hate them and will never wear them.
My favorite activities in the summer is playing soccer and football. My favorite activities in the winter are snowball fights. I also like just talking to my friends.
~BillNyetheScienceGuy
I LOVE indoor recesses. I love them because we don`t have to get all dressed up. You don`t have to try and run in all that gear.
ReplyDeleteI think the school board should change to:if its -15 degrees Celsius, its too cold to be outside.
-sillybrownie
I think the School Board should change its policy to a recommendation to keep students inside, instead of requiring them to be inside. That way the principal can decide if the wind is too strong to let the students play outside. There are only so many things to do at indoor recess, and too many indoor recesses in a row can get boring.
ReplyDeleteIt is important to bundle up when playing outside in the winter, especially covering your face.
