Detentions

In our class when students do not finished assigned work, they are given detentions.  Today, over half of my students received a detention because they did not finish either a weekly practice sheet and/or their Forest 14 logo entry for this blog.  This is unfortunate because now our voting for our blog logo is delayed.  Yet again.

I am certain that detentions are not new to my students.  They may have received them for poor choices made at recess and they may have also received them from their previous teachers because of unfinished work.  Usually, I find that these students need only ten minutes to finish an incomplete assignment.  This is extremely frustrating to a teacher because now the student has tarnished their school record with a detention when they could have just invested ten minutes at home to complete their work.

What are your thoughts regarding detentions?  Have you ever had one and what was the reason for your detention?  Could there be a different consequence for not completing homework or making poor choices?

  1. I think detention is a good thing because kids need to finish their work! They shouldn't play outside if they're not done their work! Even if I don't have a detention I still stay in.

I have gotten detention before and it was eh I don't know how to explain it. It helped me get my work done though.

Another consequence is I think they should have it as homework and if they don't finish it they stay after school and get a phone call home.

  2. I think detentions are fair because kids should get consequences if they don't finish their work on time. Like tons of kids got detention today and then they had to stay in for recess.

I've had detentions too. I feel like I'm being held inside for homework that I didn't finish like some times I didn't finish my homework.

I think that detention should be different. Like that kids don't get free time until they finish their work on time. If you didn't finish your homework you can't go on computers.

  3. Detention is okay right now but soon I will not like it!

I have had it today! It was actually pretty fun coloring but soon it will get harder and I will get more and more bored. Then I will be sorry for myself for not doing this kind of stuff!

  4. 1.I think detention is a bad thing because you get to see the principal and maybe a talk with your parents.

2.I think that detention will feel so bad because you get to stay inside for recess and you don't get to go to the bathroom or for a snack until recess is over.

3.Another thing that teachers can do is have a talk with your parents if why they don't do their homework. Another thing that teachers can do to us is that put your work for homework.

  5. My thought about detention is a fair way because some people don't finish and go out and their teacher has to spent more
    time on the work.

It is a great way to finish your work and later you don't have to spend another detention .

You can just give homework and they have to finish it fast.

  6. I think that detention is the most stupid thing ever. Why do students have to stay inside when they don't finish their
    work?

The first time I had a detention was in the Big Ham's class.
It was the most stupid experience I've ever had!!!!!!

Instead of detention maybe we could institute no fun day.

  7. I think detentions are good because they help students to learn.

The only detention I’ve ever had is today with my teacher because I didn’t finish my work.

I had to finish my blue sheet.

  8. I think detentions are reasonable. They give kids consequences because they do not do their work or get into a fight, etc.

  10. I think detention is fair because it lets students look back on how they could have done their homework at home but instead
got themselves into detention! And its not "The Big Ham's fault!

  11. I was one of the students that got to go outside for recess
because I finished my homework. But I got homework today
and I have to bring it back tomorrow and I am not excited.

  12. I feel it's fair to have detentions because it's punishment for incomplete assignments and homework. I think students should work harder and speed things up.

  13. I don't like detention because you don't go outside for recess and it is so boring and got more boring if you did not finish your homework.

  14. I think detention is fair because kids always forget to do their homework. Some kids always do their homework after and they forget to do it.

I had detention and I am okay. I did get detention by not finishing my Forest 14 logo.

  15. I think that detentions are fair because if students didn't finish their assigned homework they could stay inside and finish it so they don't have to stay inside the next day.

I got a detention because I didn't finish my Forest 14 and I got to finish it tomorrow or the next day so we can vote who's going to be the winner.

The other consequence that I think that could be given to the student is that we could bring the assigned homework home so that I don't have to stay inside.
