Our class is currently learning football as our first unit in Phys. Ed. They have learned how to properly hold the ball and catch, throw and kick techniques. Today they used their skills to play in a scrimmage. We discussed having to move in the open if you want to receive a pass as well as slowing the play down so that passes are completed properly.
The rules of our football game are fairly different. Students must pass the ball and once they catch it, they are allowed up to three steps before they must pass it off again. If the ball is dropped, intercepted or not caught, the other team gets the ball.
Students have come up to me over the years and ask why I play with such restrictions. They would rather have long throws ("hail marys"), a running game and either touch or flag football. Students also want to be able to tackle.
There are several reasons why I play with such restrictions. What do you think they are? If you were the teacher, what kinds of rules would you use? What other units do you think we should play during Phys. Ed. this year?

This blog allows students to gain valuable practice using proper Internet etiquette as well as providing them with a public voice. The majority of blog posts will be from the students combined with a few from their fearless leader. Hope you enjoy reading!

I think that The Big Ham is making not fair rules for everybody because the students want to run instead of taking three steps.
ReplyDeleteWe are not allowed to tackle in football because someone will break their bones and then their parents have to take them to
hospital.
If I was the teacher I would let them tackle kids and run to just make them happy.
If I don't like football I would play soccer because it is fair for everyone and no one will get hurt.

I think that the Big Ham uses the rules to keep everyone safe. I think that the Big Ham uses the rules to be fair.
ReplyDeleteIf I was the Big Ham I will include the Big Ham rules and I put my own rule that there is no screaming and not to have the ball a lot of time.
I wish that this year we will do gymnastics.

I think the reason the BIG HAM uses these restrictions is because it keeps students safe. For example, tackling. If the jocks tackle the smaller kids they might get hurt.
ReplyDeleteIf I was the teacher I would totally allow every rule: tackling, free running, and of course kicks!
If I could chose one unit it would totally be SSSSSSSOOOOOOCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRR!because
a lot of people like it.

I think The BIG HAM uses such restrictions in our football because if she allowed tackling some one can get hurt and if she allowed us to run more than three steps. It would be very boring if just one person just ran touchdowns multiple times.
ReplyDeleteIf I was the teacher I would allow every rule in the CFL to give them a first hand experience.
This year some other units in Phys. Ed. are soccer, volleyball, and baseball.

I think football has to be that way because you will hurt your self if you tackle. But the only thing why you have to do three steps is for not leaving people out of the game.
ReplyDeleteBut if you leave people out then the fun is not going to be fun. You don't pass and you miss catching it when they run with it because the fastest person will get all the touch downs. That is unfair for everyone.
The unit I really want to play in Phys. Ed. this year is soccer because I love it.
~thing1
I think my teacher is using these rules to protect me and other students. Plus my teacher would probably be fried or fired if someone got hurt.
ReplyDeleteI would use the same rules because it would not go on my permanent record. Also everyone would be safe.
If I could do other Phys. Ed. units I would like to do tennis because it would be my first time doing it.

I think we should let us tackle or run more then three steps. But it's still fun.

I think that my teacher uses those rules because she doesn’t want us to get hurt.
ReplyDeleteIf I was the teacher I would do the same thing because they would hurt themselves.
-thing2
I use the rules in football because it is fair rules and if the older kids are rough and they tackle the little kids like me then they will get very hurt! Brrr! I would not like that!
ReplyDeleteIf I was the teacher I would use all of the rules in the game! I love playing football! I should play football more often with my family on these sunny days! I still need to learn a lot!

The Big Ham won't let us tackle because we might get hurt.
ReplyDeleteIf I was the teacher I would let them kick the ball and would
like them passing to each other.
I want to do soccer this year during Phys. Ed.
~shadowleo
It is fair and all kids get to play and nobody gets hurt and everyone anlest get to play once and everybody gets to play because you can only 3 steps and they give the person some space.
ReplyDeleteIf I was the teacher I would not allow tackle for beginning and let 30 steps only and pass.
Other Phys. Ed. units I want to play is SOCCER! Lots of people love it and even I love it.
~darkleon
I agree with The Big Ham's rules. If (a) bigger kids tackle smaller kid(s),then the smaller kid(s) will get hurt!
ReplyDelete~kittykittypineapplehat
I think that the Big Ham use the rule because you don't get hurt because some kids are short and some kids are big and if kids are tackled, they will get hurt.
ReplyDeleteIf I am the teacher I will make a rule because some kids tackle and some kids get hurt and if they did something wrong they would get into an argument.
The other units I want this year is volleyball and soccer. We did volleyball last year and it was fun. We also did soccer last year and it is my favourite unit.
~the book
I think the reason that my teacher use the rules in the football is because it's fair to us because if we don't have a rules some of the kids can be pushed.
ReplyDeleteIf I was the teacher the rules that I would use is the same rules as my teacher have because the rules that my teacher have is much easier than other rules like tackling.
The other units that I want to do in Phys. Ed. is badminton because I love to play badminton. I'm good at it because my dad teach me how to do it.
-QuirkySquirrel123
My teacher The Big ham and I would do this too. She uses the rules so no one will get hurt playing football.
ReplyDeleteI would use the same rules as The Big Ham so no one hogs the football and I had fun with all of the good rules, I would also let them take more than 3 steps but up to 10 steps.
I want to do volleyball in Phys. Ed. because one of my family members did volleyball and it looks fun. I have played it at home rightly and it was fun.
~silly19
I think the Big Ham uses the rules because it is fair and students don’t get hurt.
ReplyDeleteIf I was the teacher I would keep the same rules.
~pokemon
I think the Big Ham has the rule of no tackling because someone will get hurt. I bet that if the Big Ham does change the rules
ReplyDeletelots of students will get hurt.
If I was the teacher I would play it the same way because I think it is fun. I wish my whole class can play it again.
