1881 Schoolhouse

Last week the Grade 4 students went to visit the 1881 Schoolhouse where they got to role play students from the 19th century.  The schoolhouse is located behind McKay Avenue School and it is small, grey one-room schoolhouse that has been restored.

From singing God Save the Queen to patriotic and arithmetic lessons and health inspection, the students experienced a mixture of classes that would have been conducted back then.

One of the biggest differences that the students noticed was the discipline expected from their teacher, Mr. Harris.  They were told to sit up straight and fill their minds with knowledge.  Students in those days did not ask questions and only spoke when asked to.

What was your favourite part of attending the 1881 Schoolhouse and why?  If you actually had to be a student in that setting for the entire year, how would you react and why?  What is the difference in expectations between students in the 21st century (today) versus the 19th century (students from 1881)?

  1. Even though I did not go I still would have thought the field trip is weird. I don't know why but I just think it's really weird and it would be fun to go but it's a school house. Who even knows what that is?

I heard from my friends that the teacher, Mr. Harris, that if you're paying attention, he would tap a ruler on your desk to make you listen. It would mean a little bit of fun but not fun because it's just really weird. When you go on those types of field trips like it's honestly the weirdest field trip because it would be strange to act like a student in 1881.

But it would be fun but instead I got to stay home because I don't like those field trips and nobody can do any thing about it. There's really no complaining about it. Anyway I was just watching TV at my house and sitting on my couch.

  2. The 1881 schoolhouse was fun but the thing that I didn't like is that we got to write with chalk and a weird pencil that they used back then. It was called a slate pencil. I didn't got to dress up because the only dress that looks like that I used in Halloween.

My favourite thing that I liked is when we got to answer the math questions because they were easy and difficult. We also had to stand up to answer a question and say, "Sir, the answer is..." The other thing that I found weird are the washroom doors in the school building. They were made up of wood. In that time we can't ask questions.

I would be happy if I was one of the kids that study there and learn. The differences about the schools now and in 1881 are that we don't use chalk anymore we use pens and pencils. Another thing that is different are that in that time the schools were so little and now they are big.

  3. My favorite part about 1881 Schoolhouse is the dressing up. Most of us wore something like a dress or a tie. Also we had to sing God Save The Queen. The experience was great.

If I had to attend that school I would freak out. For one day is fine but for a year, I wouldn't be able to handle it because it's too strict.

I think teachers from the 19th century should chill. They're always so stressed. Personally I'd prefer teachers from the 21st century.

  4. Last year I went to the 1881 Schoolhouse. I remember that we had to call Mr. Harris, Sir. Also the boys got separated from the girls.

I would not like living in that environment for a year because you have to go in an out house everyday.

When the Grade fours were gone we got to stay in the 5/6 split class. At lunch the fours weren't back yet so there were only five grade fives in the class. It was really fun.

  5. I like to sit up at the 1881 Schoolhouse because it is cool.

I do not like outside bathroom or the outhouse.

I like school in the olden days, not today.

  6. I loved the 1881 Schoolhouse. It was awesome! I loved role playing students from the 19th century. The only thing I would hate would be the outhouse. It's basically a wooden box built on a giant hole with a one foot by one foot hole in the middle of the box.

If I had to be in that school for the entire year it would be very interesting for me. I would enjoy it probably though. but it would be very hot in the summer.

  7. Last year I remember going to the 1881 Schoolhouse with Mr. Harris who was our teacher in the schoolhouse. We could not talk or ask questions at all.

My favorite part in the schoolhouse was that we got to sing God Save the Queen with all of our classmates including the teachers. My other favorite part was that we could not talk and if you do talk you would have to face the wall. Even though I was one of them.

If my school was the 1881 Schoolhouse I would die because there would be no Chrome books, no talking, and not very nice bathrooms. I would die.

  8. I remember we got to go to the 1881 Schoolhouse last year. I did not dress up but some student dress up.

My favourite part of 1881 Schoolhouse is hand writing on the chalkboard and the chalkboard have a line. The worst part is seeing the bathroom. It was little bit creepy. I remember that in the bathroom I see a man in the desk.

If I am a student from the 1881 School house for entire year I would be scared because the teacher from 1881 school house is very strict. If you did something you get to stand by the door.

But the grade five have to stay at school. It was just five of us. It was fun in the music because we get to play a game and we started the recorder.

  9. I remember going to the 1881 Schoolhouse. But I didn't dress up. I also remember that we're not allowed to ask the teacher a question and we should hear the clock ticking when we're answering a question or when he was talking we should be listening. Last thing that I remember is when we went to the bathroom and I think it was creepy because it looks like it's abandoned.

My favourite part of attending the 1881 Schoolhouse is when we did a spelling bee on the board and the words are a little bit hard but I still try to spell it. I like it because it's challenging to me.

If I actually had to be a student in that setting for the entire year I would be fine because that's how we would do schools in the Philippines. Like writing on the board by a chalk and the teachers are strict.

  10. My favourite part about attending the 1881 Schoolhouse is that we get to dress up.

If I had to stay there for the entire year I will never go back.

The difference between back then and today is we can write with whichever hand we want and we don't have to say "Sir" or "Ma'am" to say an answer.

  12. I didn’t go to the 1881 schoolhouse. My dad had slept in so I didn't make it. I wanted to go to the 1881 Schoolhouse.

  13. My favourite part of the 1881 Schoolhouse was when we had to say "Sir the answer is..." and it was kind of strange but fun. Winona in my class got in trouble and got sent to the door. She was about to go back to the door because she was talking to her friend next to her. It was also really funny.

I had so so much fun at the 1881 Schoolhouse. We got to see the outhouse but we did not go inside because it was blocked off. The reason is because it is very very strange and why it is my favourite is because it was really fun. I want to be a person back in the 1881 that's why.

I really really want to be an person from 1881. I think that it will be hard but kind of fun too. My teacher said we can maybe do this on Thursday because we had our field trip on a Thursday and it was really fun. Like a lot.

The difference about the 21st century (today) versus the 19th century (students from the 1881) is very different because they were different from now. We also had to sing God Save The Queen. In one room the grades were from grade 1 to grade 12. That was only in one room for that many class rooms. We also had to wait till he told us too.

  14. I really liked the 1881 Schoolhouse because they actually treated you like before when it was the 1800's. I would survive only one year of school in that place then I'd be at home school. My reaction would be just fine unless I got hit. I would cry but not out loud.

My favorite part of the 1881 Schoolhouse was that you actually get a spelling bee. I think that was a really bad choice for them to make a rule about slapping the kids.

From now and then I really think they made a big change on these schools. Oh and I'd have to go to the washroom in the out house.

  15. My favorite thing about being there is that Mr. Harris sent the boys to one half of the class and the girls to the other side.

Another thing I wish we had now is an outhouse because if some one creates an odour no one can do anything about.

If I had to go to a school like that for a whole year I think I would do better than previous years.

    1. But why would you want to make an odor in an outhouse that would just be very unpleasent and you would probably get you in to loads of trouble. Plus you would also have to smell it if you go back in.

  16. I loved the 1881 Schoolhouse. My favorite thing was when the teacher saw some of the girls wearing pants. He said, "Young ladies, are you wearing your brother's pants to school?" Then he came over to the boys and said, "Young man, do not let your sisters leave the house with your pants on." It was the best day of my life. We got to see the outhouse, but it was covered with a big frame of glass so we couldn't go inside but we could see inside. We learnt that the river below the school once rose 10 meters higher than it was usually! But, a smart man saw what was happening and quickly put up some metal rings around the school and attached them to the walls of the school. He then put rope through the holes in the middle rings, hand tied the rope to trees nearby so the school wouldn't be washed away during the flood, and it worked! We also learnt about an army man that retired and became a teacher, he was very strict he treated all the students like little soldiers! And at recess, he was at the place where we went to the bathroom drinking alcohol, he did that all the time. No wonder he was so weird to the children, he was drunk all the time when he was teaching. They call him Mr. Snitch behind its back.

  17. My favorite part of the 1881 Schoolhouse was that the teachers were strict and on point.

Two things I thought were kind of unfair were, we couldn't ask questions & when we answered his questions we had to respond "Sir, the answer is...".

I think not being allowed to ask questions is ridiculous. Other than being told things, asking questions is basically the way of learning! (The people from the olden days really need a lesson on how to teach!)

Why I don't like "Sir the answer is..." you ask? Well,... I'm sorry I don't have time to continue lecturing the olden day teachers!!!

  18. I think the 1881 schoolhouse is a horror because we
have to sit probably and if we're not listening we would have to stand in our chairs. We took a picture and we don`t get to smile.

and we got separate by the boys and girl And I won`t survie in That school and if I get to stay there at school I would run a away.

  19. My favourite thing was looking at the out house because it was really old. I also liked how I got in trouble and I had to get sent to the back door and stand there for like two minutes and when I walked to the back door everyone was staring at me and it was really funny I thought.

I would get really bored crossing my hands and putting them on the desk. I did not like that. I think it might be a little frustrating.

Teachers were much more stricter than this century. All the students were squished into one room. I would hate it so much.
