ICE School - What an Experience!

During the week before Spring Break, our class finally got to spend a week at Rogers Place for ICE School.  This is the home building of our local hockey team, the Edmonton Oilers.

It was a full week and the students got to spend time doing many activities and meeting a number of different people and guest speakers.

The highlight for me was getting to sit outside the Oilers dressing room before practice and waiting for them to start their morning practice.  We saw all of them as they came out of the dressing room and almost all of them acknowledged us by saying hello or asking us how we were.

Throughout the week the students had to record their thoughts and sketches inside their ICE School journals.  This was to help them remember their experience and also use it as a reference to write thank-you letters.

This is an experience that I really enjoyed and I will remember it for a long time.

Describe your experience at ICE School.  What were your favourite activities and why?

  1. At Ice school my favorite thing that we got to do was a presentation on the Alberta Signs Museum. The person representing the building told us how neon worked and how lighting has revolved
around us,("Oh look at all of this neon!") It's almost too overwhelming to even think about how much of that stuff we make.

I also enjoyed the mosaic (Tsa tsa ke k'e) created by Alex Janvier. It's surprisingly big actually. From a distance it does not look big but every step you take closer you begin to realize that it's really big. Congratulations Alex!

  2. At ICE SCHOOL we learned the events and the levels.

All of a sudden we met Hunter that mascot of the Oilers. The mascot is basically the leader of the Oilers and the person who comes out when the Oilers score a goal.

When we met Edgar Jackson he talked about helping the community and volunteering. When he was telling about that I got distracted about the door because I thought hunter was going to bash in the door. Hunter scared me because he moved to me and went backwards. That's what scared me so much ;) thanks Hunter for visiting.

We also met Tim Pedrick the neon signs person. He talked about how he put some signs up and another person asked if he could take it and put it as something that he wanted. When he was done they all went home and then sat down on their nice cozy couches and watched some TV and put on a good show and then they just watched it and then want to bed after.

Thank you for all of your work and stuff you set up for us. everyone hope you have a wonderful day at Rogers Place.

  3. I really enjoyed when we spend one week at ICE School. One thing that I really liked was the mystery object. There was a toonie in the ground and there is only one in the whole Rogers Place.

One of the people we met there was Mr. Spencer. He performed magic and was the real mascot for the games. Did you know that?

One of my favorite activities in Ice School was getting to watch the Oilers walk from their dressing room and then we watched them practice for their big match against the Sharks.

Then Mrs. McLeod made us count the stairs. It took us a long time and there was 161 stairs.

This was the biggest experience ever because not many schools get to go there and see all the cool stuff like the four art pieces, the Hall of Fame where we got to see Wayne Gretzky's dressing room stall where he gets ready for the games.

  4. It was so, so, so much fun. At ICE school we got to meet lots of people and I was so excited to see Hunter, the Edmonton Oilers mascot. Also I loved that I got to see Leon Draisaitl. He is my favourite hockey player.

I had a good experience at ICE school it was so much fun.

My favourite activities were seeing all the hockey players and and also going to the Hall of Fame. Not many people can go into the Hall of Fame. It is like a once in a life time event.

  5. I thought Ice School is so good! We get to see the Oilers and
the mascot, Hunter was so good. He knows how to flip and was so silly.

We also get to see a lot of speakers and we had a mystery object and the object was a toonie.

The best art I saw in Ice School was the mosaic by Alex Janiver because it was so big. That's why I like it and I like
siting downstairs. It was more better in my opinion because I had a better view and I was a little afraid of being so high.

Many classes do not get a chance to go to Rogers Place for ICE School.

  6. I had a fun time at Ice School. We learned more about Rogers, we looked at some stuff that many don't see. My favorite was when Mr. Spencer did magic tricks and wands came out of other wands.

  7. We went to ICE School last week. It was awesome! It was the most exciting experience in my LIFE! We did so many things there and I'll talk about my favourite things.

The thing that baffled me the most was this guy we were interviewing, I asked him what he was and he said "Mascot Coordinator" and I was literally in shock when I heard that. I had found one of the Oilers biggest secrets! He was HUNTER!

My second favourite thing was the Hall Of Fame. There we learned all about the Oilers history like, did you know that Wayne Gretzky
was in Los Angeles December 19, 1984 when he scored his 1000th career point.

Overall all I'm trying to say is that it was the best time of my life!

  8. I really enjoyed our week at ICE school, Rogers Place with our Rogers guide, Mrs. McLeod.

We did LOTS of really fun things. For example, the Hall of fame.
We got to go in there and let me tell you, it is really cool! The class and I had to draw two hockey masks from in between long ago, and now. (I chose a white mask made of wood with air holes and the latest mask from now.)

  9. I really enjoyed Ice school because it was my first time doing to Rogers Place.

My favourite part of the week is meeting Hunter and waiting to see the players come out in the dressing room. The worst part in the week is counting all the stairs because we have to go up and down.

My favorite art is Alex Janvier.

We got to sit on the suite level. Ms. McLeod tell us that the suite level is expensive. We got to go in Hall of Fame and most of people cannot go inside.

We meet some people and my favorite is Mr. Tait and Mr Spencer.

Mrs. McLeod tell us that there is a secret object. When it was our last day she told us it was a toonie in the floor. We passed it all the time.

Amanda Bachand tell us that during the game one thousand staff in the game are working.

  10. The week at ICE School is a good experience because we get to explore some of the places that is in Rogers Place that people don't get to see a lot.

My favourite activity is when we get to guess what's the mystery object and it's a toonie. I like it because it sounds interesting to find. My second favourite activity is when we get to sit outside the Oilers dressing room and meet them like The Big Ham said in her blog. My third favourite activity is when we went to Studio 99. I like it because we get to see a lot of Wayne Gretzky's jerseys. My fourth favourite activity is when we went to Hall of Fame because we get to see an old mask and a new mask, old jerseys and new jerseys. It was interesting.

My least favourite activity is when we count stairs because it's tiring and my legs is burning by going up and going down. In my opinion counting stairs is the worst part. The stairs are 161.

The people that we met is Amanda Bachand, Cam Tait, Tim Pedrick, Grant Nicholson, Sadie Caron. All of them are speakers except Mr. Spencer and Hunter. My teacher also said that not so many people get to see it.

  12. The week at ICE school was not as fun as I expected because all we did was walk up and down stairs. The only things I actually enjoyed were being in the Sky Lounge and in the Scotia bank suite because it is really expensive to be in them. Also I liked the name tags because they looked good on honestly anyone (even me!!!)

Not to disappoint any Oiler fans but I'm more of a Washington Capitals fan even though I don't really follow hockey.
Also I was not there on Wednesday so I missed out on the Hunter visit (also named as "Lynx".

My favorite speaker was Tim Pedrick because he was neat.

  13. I had a lot of fun at ICE school. There was one thing that I did not like very much. It is was that we had to walk a lot. At ICE school we met ten people. My favorite thing from ICE school was when we met Hunter. It was my favorite part because he is very funny.

  14. I liked Hunter. Hunter is actually Mr. Spencer. Also I liked Mr. Spencer's magic tricks. It was really cool because the tricks look hard and impossible.

My favorite thing was Sadie Saron - NSRK because I love water and the ocean and also I like the nature.

  15. I had lots of fun at Rogers Place. ICE School was the best thing to do school in. It was so much fun! We met Amanda Bachand, she told us about the place. We also met Mr. Tait, he told us to imagine about what we want to be when we grow up. He is also in a wheel chair too. We met Tim Pedrick, he works at the Neon Sign Museum across the street from Rogers Place. We met Grant Nicholson, he said about partnerships and about Rogers Place just a little too. We met HUNTER,he is the mascot for the Edmonton Oliers. We also met Hanson and Dan, they are the ones that ride the Zamboni and they talked about it and how it was made.

My favourite person we met was Edgar Jackson, he is in a wheel chair like Cam Tait. He is also friends of Ice School. Then the last person we met was Sadie Caron of the NSRK.

Our teacher's name was Mrs. McLeod. She was so awesome so much. She told us about a secret object in the ground it was a toonie. It was cool.

We had to count the stairs as we go up them. It took like 15 minutes or less. We also had to go up to each level and name what the levels are called. Level one was Event Level 1. Level two was Mezzanine Level 2. The third level was called Main Concourse 3. The fourth level was also called ScotiaBank Suite Level 4. My second favourite level was called PCL Loge Level 5. Here it comes my favourite level is Upper Concourse level 7.

My two things that I still have to say is about the four art pieces that three artists did. The first artist that did the Iron Foot Place. His name was Alex Janvier. The other artist that did the Essential Tree. The artist name was Tim and Jan Edler.

  16. We were one class out of 28 classes that got to go to the week at ICE School. It was really fun. My favourite activity was going on the 7th floor to write about the seats. The people that we saw at Rogers Place were Mr. Spencer. He was very funny. Mr.Cam Tait talked about when you imagine. Tim Pedrick talked about neon lights. Grant Nicholson talked about partnership. Hunter the mascot came to visit and we took a class photo with him. Hanson and Dan talked about the Zamboni. Edgar Jackson told us how to spell and Sadie Caron told us about the NSRK and pollution. We got to see the Oilers come out their dressing room.

  17. I liked the week of ICE school that we had last week. We meet a lot of people like Mr. Spencer, Mr. Tait, Amanda Bachand, Tim Pedrick, Grant Nicholson, Hunter the mascot of the Oilers, Hanson and Dan, Edgar Jackson and Sadie Caron from the North Saskatchewan treatment plant.

I liked to thank all the people that we got to meet and to talk to. This was a big opportunity for us because not everyone gets to go there. So thank you for your hard work.

I liked siting on the VIP seats with the rooms because it was tall and you didn't had to wait or go somewhere. If I get to choose where can I stay for one week at Rogers Place I will go to ICE School.
