Halloween 2023

In just over one week ghosts, goblins, and ghoulish figures will be roaming school buildings and neighbourhoods.  Halloween is almost here!

In our school this year students will be allowed to come to school dressed up in their choice of costume.  Some guidelines are:

a)  costumes must be respectful, weather-appropriate, and safe within a school environment;

b)  dangerous and/or scary items are to remain at home; and

c)  students must be able to sit, breathe, walk and hear while dressed in their costumes.

There is a school parade planned for after lunch in the gymnasium where each class will get to take a lap around and proudly display their costumes.  Some classroom might even have separate activities to celebrate the occasion.

Although I enjoy the candy aspect of Halloween, I have never been big on dressing up.  It is just not my thing.  When I was younger I think I went as a black cat because it was easy to attach a tail and some whiskers.  One year at school, I did dress up as Princess Leia complete with actual cinnamon buns attached to my hair.  Another year I think I was dressed up as Mulan.

The best part of Halloween though is going out to get the candy.  I can remember my sister and I trekking block after block, door after door and accumulating huge quantities of candy.  We would go home and dump it all over the kitchen floor and go through the sorting process.  We got so much that it would last long into December.

What are your thoughts about the guidelines for dressing up?  Describe your costume that you plan on wearing for this Halloween.  How do you sort through your candy?

  1. Personally, I somewhat agree with the guidelines. The one that I disagree with the most is that we can’t even bring small accessories like wands. Accessories really add to your costume, you can’t be a soldier without a sword, or a wizard without a wand. I believe in keeping pretend guns at home because that can scare young people, but scary and small accessories can really add to your costume. I do agree with the guideline where you have to be able to sit, breathe, walk, and hear in your costume.

This year I am dressing up as Doctor Strange. My costume has a really cool 3D printed golden Sling Ring, cape brooches, and Eye of Agamotto. Me and my mom sewed the sick looking robe and cape. My costume is amazing!

Each year, for trick-or-treating me and my sister just go around our neighborhood. But this year I am going with two of my friends in a different neighborhood. My family and I usually roast hotdogs on the fire pit outside before we go trick-or-treating. Trick-or-treating is the best part of Halloween.

  2. The Big Ham posted the guidelines for the halloween costumes at my school and I somewhat agree with them. I still think kids should be able to bring their own items.
If their objects are scary, they should put them in their bag or a pocket whenever little kids come. If the items are dangerous they should just leave it at home. There should be a ban on scary masks because the last thing we need is little kids throwing a tantrum because a kid frightened them.

Even though I love candy (a little too much) I don’t dress up. Unless you count dressing up as myself.

Like I said, I’m a candy/snacks eating machine, but I don’t go trick-or-treating either. Instead my parents buy my siblings and I un petit bon-bon. I hope we get puff-puff this year!

  3. I think that we should be able to dress up and bring accessories but I respect our principal's decision. Maybe division one should dress up not very scary and division two can dress up however they want but with no blood. No inappropriate stuff. No scaring the little children.

For Halloween I am going to be an angel. I have a white dress and a golden halo wiith a gold necklace that might look like a rope.

Me and my brother are going trick or treating. We get tired of walking but we go to every single house. Me and him get at least five whole bags full of candy. First we go to our neighborhood. We then go to our grandma's house. Then we go to our grandparents rich neighborhood.

  4. I strongly agree on most of the guidelines because you do not want to scare the younger children. Plus, if I know a thing or two about younger kids it is that they get scared easily, really easy. To be honest I completely agree with every single guideline.

This year, I’m being a dark angel. It includes: black laced wings with gray ripped fabric. My favourite part is the halo headband, a few black lace pieces sticking out here and there. The dress is a laced bottom with gray fabric. The top is a crossed black velvet with silver bolts. I’m so excited for halloween!

Usually for trick or treating we bring the wagon for my brother, but I walk until my legs are tired. That is when we start to head home. Then we dump all of our candy into separate piles. Time for the poison checking process. All of our candy usually lasts for about 12 months. I’ll try to have more than one piece of candy. It can be rare to get king sized chocolate bars or cans of pop, but more and more houses give them out every year. Last year, I got about 3 full sized candy bars and 2 cans of pop. This year I’m going trick or treating with my cousins. Where I live they give out lots of yummy treats. Happy Halloween!

  5. I think Halloween sucks for me because I don't celebrate Halloween. People are just walking in the dark in silly costumes saying trick or treat. In school the guidelines I don't really care about them. I’m not even going to be here. For grade three to kindergarten, they should not even come. It should be a P.D. day for them. My thoughts of this Halloween is that it's going to be terrible.

My costume for Halloween is nothing. Isn't it great? What even the point of coming to school in a goofy costume. I think when people that don't celebrate we get free candy at stores. When Halloween is over I don’t get to stay at home. Why if I did do Halloween I would be the car dealership balloon.

Now for the part I hate “trick or treat” but I don't even like the dark. I have to go the hard way and buy candy. I generally hate Halloween.

  6. I’m glad that we can dress up for Halloween at school but I think that we should be able to bring accessories and dress up in whatever costume we want and just stay away from little kids.

I’m dressing up as a creepy scarecrow but I'm still deciding whether to put the scarecrow makeup on or not. To set the scarecrow effect, on the night before Halloween I don’t wear my hair in braids, instead I wear my hair loose and then in the morning, I comb it until it’s SUPER frizzy and then it’s hideous.

We normally go trick or treating around 6:45 and don’t come back until about 8:00. Even though I'm wearing a scarecrow costume at school, I’m going to wear a blow up astronaut. If you came to my house and looked in me and my brother's candy bin, there would be candy from 2018! The best part is this year my mom is actually letting me carve a pumpkin!

  7. Well I think that our principal was right to have a Halloween at school and wear a costume. And we can walk around the gym showing you costumes to the whole school around the west gym.

So the costumes the kids should wear are not that scary and something that will be appropriate and safe to wear because we have kindergarten and grade 1. My costume will be a secret for now. But I remember last year I was dead mary person with blood on my dress.

Ok about the trick or treating. So on trick or treat you have to go to somebody's door and ask “trick or treat give me something good to eat” and after they can give you your candy in the bucket. What are your thoughts about Halloween? And what are YOU going to be on Halloween? What do you think about having Halloween in school?

  8. Most of the guidelines seem reasonable, but not all of them. Some of them are hard to find the limit. For example, how can we tell if our costume is too scary or not appropriate? But the one rule I really dislike is not being able to bring any extra accessories for our costumes because it helps people understand what costume you are wearing.

This year I’m going to be a character from one of my favorite shows (and very popular) called Wednesday. She’s from the Addams family. I have a black wig with braids and a black dress with white spots, cuffs, a collar, and maybe black boots.

Our candy collecting/sorting process is simple.

  9. I agree with the guidelines on how it should be done because I know how you can lose something. But it's Halloween. It is about scaring people well except for the 3s, 2s, 1s and Ks in my school. I think that I rather that everyone brings their masks, swords and knives out at recess.

This year I'm going as an angel for Halloween. I got a white dress with white fishnet and sparkles for a collar and sleeves and white headband with a halo attached to it. It didn't come with wings so my family got some devil wings and made some beautiful angel wings.

For trick-or-treating I really go and meet my cousins and friends and go though the neighborhood. Last year there was a house that had a Batman car in their yard. When we were done going through a neighborhood we went into the living room, me and my brother flip candy bags upside down then we sort and snack. Then go to sleep at a time that my parents don't get angry at us. That's my Halloween.

  10. Most guidelines that were given seem reasonable to me. If we brought dangerous or scary items then the little kids would get scared or even panic. Imagine coming to school with a fake knife or blood dripping all over you. If a kindergarten- grade one kid saw you they would probably scream, panic or cry. I don't usually have accessories because they would probably break, get lost or stolen. In my opinion I agree with the guidelines.

I am going as a werewolf for Halloween. The makeup is going to be awesome, well in my opinion. A movie called Twilight gave me the idea. My costume is going to include: black fluffy slip on paws, very fluffy ears that are black and gray, a long black fluffy tail, a gray furry vest, and some normal everyday clothes. The makeup we are trying to do has: lines on my forehead that are dirt brown, black lipstick and a red scratch or bite. I am going to have so much fun with this costume.

Trick or treating is awesome! It's awesome because all you have to say is “Trick Or Treat!” and they give you candy. My favorite candy is Coffee Crisp. Everytime we get home, my mom checks and we sort through the candy to make sure none of it is bad for us. My dad eats all of it before we can get to the candy! But I bet it was delicious for him. I hope that doesn't happen this year!

  11. I think that the guidelines are a good thing because if we do not know what to do then the people will bring scary stuff. The little kids will get nightmares and be scared. But if we do not bring scary stuff then the little kids will not be scared. Three reasons not to bring scary stuff are:

    a) it would be dangerous

    b) it would be scary

    c) it will not be safe.

For Halloween I am going to be a tiger. It has orange, black, white and pink ears and gloves that attach to it. There is also a long tail but not too long. It goes up to my legs. The eyes are black and white and so cute. Hehe.

For trick or treating I am going to be doing family only because I want to do it. If it is really cold then we are going to Bonnie Doon Mall because there are people that give you free candy. Everybody is giving free candy. Maybe I would get 5 or 4 or 3 or more bags. Then when I am done then we go home, dump the candy on the floor and sort it out. Then in the morning my mom puts some candy in my lunch bag but I sometimes sneak some in my lunch bag too. Hehe.

  12. This year in my school my principal has guidelines. The students can't wear anything scary, dangerous or have accessories that cover the face. But I totally agree.

For Halloween this year I am going to be a giraffe. The materials are soft and fluffy and the zipper is cold on my skin. It is also a little big for me so I can fit lots of layers underneath.

Before we got my dog my parents would take turns every year to take me trick-or-treating but now my mom just goes with me. We usually start trick-or-treating at 6:00 and end at 8:30. We put my candy in a Walmart bag and my parents hide it when we're done.

When we get home I usually eat some of my candy and sort it into things I don’t like and things I like. Then I play some games for 30 min then go to bed.

  13. The Big Ham has told us the guidelines to Halloween! I think that scary items should not be allowed, and I think that inappropriate items should not be allowed either. The way I think it should be done is not the same as The Big Ham’s guidelines. All the students should be allowed items. Almost everyone's costume has a separate item with it so we should be allowed.

This year I am dressing up as a sorceress. It has a mask with some fake gems, almost everything on my costume is black but there is some red and gold. There is a short black cloak that I have to tie in a bow. My favorite part of my costume is my dress. It is black with some white and gray on the sleeves and on the bottom. So far this is my second favorite costume!

For trick or treating this year I am going with my cousin. Last year we went to my neighborhood. This time me and my family are going to my cousin's neighborhood. When we get home we usually watch a movie. My mom and my dad let me have two pieces of candy.

  14. I think scary items should be allowed because it might be an element to the costume. And plus people are supposed to be scary on Halloween but students do have to sit, walk, breathe and hear. I agree with the other guidelines very strongly.

I´m going to be a Minecraft person for Halloween with a diamond sword and enchanted pickaxe but I don’t know if it is netherite but the material is not real of course. So I can say I will celebrate Halloween and acquire large quantities of candy this Halloween. And I WILL eat it all.

I get a lot of candy but not many bags of chips, pieces of gum, soda {AKA never}, big candies and toys. I wish I could get more bubble gum and soda because I really like soda and I love bubble gum. I like bubble gum because of its many flavors, chewy sensation and because you can blow bubbles with it. And I hope I DON'T get any Smarties, M&Ms, ketchup chips, toothbrushes and mints.

  15. Some guidelines are silly because if somebody wants to be a prince and he wants a sword with his costume and it's not a real sword then he can bring the sword but the guidelines says it's not allowed and it will be boring. But you will think that they will play with their sword so you can take the sword or thing they were playing and give them back at recess but the guidelines.

I don't celebrate Halloween but if I come to school at Halloween I will be a witch or a evil princess or I can stay at home at Halloween. I really don't know. It's confusing.

About trick or treating I don't know very much. By the way at Halloween I will go to school or I will stay at home so I will not go trick or treating. I don't know what to do so I am not going to go trick or treating.

  16. Halloween is a day where some people go out on the deepest darkest days to go trick-or-treating which is also a fun activity.

There is also a few guidelines and rules that you may have to take into consideration. The Big Ham says that we can´t bring accessories because they can get lost or stolen, but I think that it takes away from the costume, and I think if we lose our accessories that it is our problem. So in my opinion we should be able to bring our accessories

I'm dressing up as a duck this year or an oochya. I'm dressing up as a duck because my class gave me the nickname Oochya which means duck in Ukrainian.
