We live in Canada. It's cold in Canada. Everybody knows that. But over the past week it's been uber cold. We're talking -30 degrees Celsius with wind chills in the -40s. It was so bad last Friday that over 100 students were absent from our school building.
I think everybody knew it was coming though. We had been experiencing unseasonably warm temperatures all through December, at least 5 degrees warmer than normal. Everyone said that we would have to pay for it eventually because you can't get something for nothing.
I can't recall when I went to school if we ever had indoor recesses. I don't even think they calculated wind chill back in the olden days. Parents just sent their kids out the door for the long walk to and from school. It probably wasn't a long of a walk as I'm making it sound, now that I think about it. As for not attending school when it was cold? Good luck. Parents sent their kids in all sorts of weather. At least that was my experience.
As a teacher, I personally do not enjoy indoor recesses. I am of the firm belief that students need to be outside, not only to be active, but for fresh air and a change in environment. Our school division has a policy that students are kept inside if it is -23 degrees Celsius or colder. It was a long week of indoor recesses.

Last week it got to -30 degrees. But with the wind chill it went down to - 40 degrees. Going to school was a bad idea! Actually, going to school was a terrible idea! No, I didn’t miss any school because of the cold. My mom made me go!
ReplyDeleteI love indoor recess. We had indoor recess all week. I love them because we get to go to the gym. Usually when we are in the gym, I play hockey or soccer. I go with Mr. Chip and my classmates.

The winter of January 2024 started off with the coldest, snappiest cold snap I have ever experienced. The temperatures dropped below -30 degrees celsius and below -40 with the windchill. I’m the kind of person who does not care about the temperature a lot. So it did not affect me too much.
ReplyDeleteI still went to school no matter what the temperature. The one thing I despise about the cold is being cooped up inside. At school we had indoor recess for a whole week. I love fresh air and playing, I do not function as well without. I found it a little harder to focus last week because I was inside all day. Even at home I was inside all day because it was too cold to go on a walk or cross-country skiing. Luckily I had hockey on the weekend to get moving. I mean, we all knew it was coming.

Edmonton is the city that I live in. Recently there has been a cold snap that means it gets very cold like -50 degrees Celsius. My parents would make me go to school anyday year even if it was -300. Since I went to school, it was very gloomy because it was cold but that was fine. I had knitting by my side. Plus I had a field trip on the coldest days in 50 YEARS.
ReplyDeleteThat cold snap had our recess destroyed because it was so cold. Even though we were inside, I like it because our EA takes us to the Gym and we get to play fun games! Or else play with my friends in the classroom.

The winter of 2024 started with a horrible surprise… COLD WEATHER!!! The temperature dropped from sunny skies and good vibes to a cold dreaded winter. Edmonton has not been this cold for 50 years.
ReplyDeleteNot a lot of kids went to school for almost a week. I did not go to school for three days. One reason was that our car did not start. That is probably the reason why a lot of kids could not go to school for a while. Another reason might be because they did not have the proper snow gear.
In my opinion indoor recesses are the best. My main reason is because during recess I like to draw, but when it is outdoor the surface is rough and the paper can rip easily. So when it is indoor I can draw and not be worried of the paper ripping. I love indoor recess.
Clearly Edmonton is not the place to be if you do not like cold weather, missing school or indoor recess.

Twenty-twenty four started cold! It was like the weather was trying to freeze us. When you stepped outside you could feel that the weather was -30 degrees Celsius with the wind chill it was even colder. I felt like every morning the temperature dropped by 10 degrees. We all asked for snow to come, but the weather followed just behind it. I would have been happy if the temperature stayed the same throughout the freeze.
ReplyDeleteLots of people went home and stayed there. I was one person that went to school. My parents said you are going to school so every morning I bundled up in my snow gear and headed off out into the cold. But I will admit there were some lessons that I would not want to miss if I were stuck at home.
One very good or very bad thing that happened was we had a lot of indoor recesses. At my school I feel like the people that liked outdoor recess got outnumbered by 98%. When everyone heard it was going to be an indoor recess they all jumped in happiness and joy. It was like a bunch of birds just found a lot of free fresh food. In my opinion I don’t mind indoor recess, but it is good to get fresh air.

This winter was the coldest in like 40 years in Edmonton, well that’s what my dad said but he could be just estimating. I'm not a fan of the cold but I still like winter because I don’t like the heat. Personally I think the cold is better than the heat.
ReplyDeleteDuring the cold I went to school. I don't know why over 100 students were not at school. Of course the teachers didn't let us go outside. We could freeze or get sick and the parents could yell at the school. We had a lot of indoor recesses. I personally enjoy indoor recess because we only have indoor recess if it's cold out, so I don't want to go out in the cold. Indoor recess is fun because you could sometimes go to the gym or stay in the class and I could play with my friends without freezing. My classroom has a couch and I sometimes play on it with my friends.
Overall I like winter and indoor recess. Do you like winter and winter recess?

Winter in general is a very cold season here in Alberta. With El-Ninõ it's very interesting to see how the weather behaves this year.
ReplyDeleteI have been very cold these past few days with the weather getting into the -40s which was pretty cold even for where I live which gets very cold every year. I have only stayed home for the cold once this winter which is very rare for me. In fact I have only stayed home twice in my life for the cold, but lots for being sick.
We also have lots of indoor recesses which I don't really like because the class is always so loud. But indoor recesses are not going to prevent me from having a good winter. So all and all I think it's been a good winter.

Baby It’s Cold Outside! It’s been cold ever since I came home from Phoenix, it has been minus 30 degrees Celsius with a wind chill of minus 40 degrees Celsius. On Tuesday it was - 16 degrees Celsius and we thought it was so warm. People from California would think we’re weird:-). To be honest I really enjoy indoor recess because I don’t want to suffer every minute frozen. I’m glad I went to school so I wouldn’t be stuck at home bored out of my mind!

ReplyDeleteI didn't go to school in 4 days because it's very cold to me and there is a problem in our house. My mom is sick so she did not wake me up and I'm cooking a breakfast for her and to everyone in my family. So I didn’t go to school because of that and it's very cold. That is my experience of winter.
The indoor recess is more like it because the students can be warm inside to have fun and play. I like indoor recesses and somehow if outdoors that's unlucky for me because it's cold for us.

This winter we started with it being super warm outside and then all of a sudden it is the coldest it has been in a long time. It is like -30 and -40 degrees Celsius out. I normally like the cold but this winter I could not even let my dogs outside. We were planning on getting them booties for their paws so they don't get cold. My mom didn't let me go on the field trip because she thought the bus was going to break down. So we missed a lot but it is fine.

I honestly don’t know if I like winter and I don’t like winter but I do also and I’m confusing myself. I have reasons supporting BOTH sides. I like winter because we can have snowball fights. I can drink hot chocolate or frozen lemonade slushies or make money from shoveling snow for a $5 dollar job!
ReplyDeleteBut these are the reasons why I don’t like winter: I rarely get cold, I have to stay inside for school recesses and someone { definitely not me <sarcasm } might slip and break their bones because of the darn ice! When I try to shovel sidewalks, my back breaks into millions of pieces. I DO NOT LIKE HOCKEY!!!
There is one thing I really don't like and that is indoor recesses. I don't like indoor recesses because one: I don’t get fresh air two, I get bored and finally my ears break because of everybody's piercing screaming or shouting. Do you like winter, yes or no?

I don't know why people don’t call January Janbrrrrrary because that's what everyone was saying ever since the cold snap. Even though we live in Canada it was pretty cold considering the extreme weather warning. Without the windchill it was -30 degrees Celsius ( -22 degrees Fahrenheit ), and with - 40 degrees Celsius ( -40 degrees Fahrenheit ). So as you can see it would be illegal for us to have to go outside for recess.

Every time the secretary announces the temperature I cross my everything hoping that the windchill does its job and pleases me. I especially love it when my class’s EA takes us to go to the gym. We either play badminton or volleyball. I like outdoor recess too but that's when it's warm outside.
Some kids in my class didn't even get to go to the gym because they didn’t go to school at all. My parents could never even dream of letting me stay home when I’m not sick. Even if I did stay home that would ironically be the exact day we do something fun. So I’m really glad I did.

Actually I love indoor recess because me and my classmates can go with a teacher assistant to the gym and that's lovely (for me) but for some people not because they want to get fresh air and that's why we won't go outside. What is your opinion about this winter and do you like the weather?

The second week of January and we are freezing in Alberta. In Edmonton, Alberta recently we have reached -45 degrees Celsius with the windchill. On Friday we had eleven students total out of twenty-two. And we had a field trip to the indigenous center in Fort Edmonton that day.
ReplyDeleteThe cold snap started around Monday or Tuesday and ended around Saturday or sunday. Throughout the week I hoped that I would be the only one at school one day. It didn't happen, but I got close. Less and less people came to school until there were only eleven. So I actually wanted to go to school.
I can’t recall the last time we went outside for recess. But that's fine with me, I love indoor recess. You do not have to put on bulky clothing or have to go out in the cold winter or hot sun. In our school it has to be -25 degrees Celsius or colder. I really liked this cold snap.

ReplyDeleteThe temperature was -30 or under or over. At school over 100 students were not here on Friday. On the weekend I was staying in the basement where there was a heater, a good one.
At school there was indoor recess all week. There are many things to do indoors. Our class student helper brought us to the gym to play. I really like playing badminton at the gym instead of staying inside our classroom and eating or waiting. The best indoor recess is lunch. We get to watch movies sometimes.
Winter was great while it resets with us for a while indoor recess fun, lunch recess amazing. Winter 2024 is awesome.

It's been really cold in Edmonton. It's like -40. It's so cold and because of that I got sick and my window froze. If I told somebody that my window got frozen they wouldn't believe it but it's true and I tried opening it but it wouldn't open and that's when I got angry.
ReplyDeleteAbout going to school - I think the teachers should give it as a holiday because it is so cold and on my field trip day my dad said you are not going to school it's too cold. But I wanted to go but he said no and I couldn't go on the field trip.
I like indoor recess but now it is too much. It is always indoor recess. Because of that I am getting bored. I want to go outside and do some things.
