Roller Derby : a full contact sport!
Most people don’t know what Roller Derby is. But even if you do, you probably think it is just a bunch of girls on Roller skates, NOT ROLLERBLADES!!!!! So I am going to explain it to you. I only have a few short paragraphs, so here I go…
Roller Derby is DEFINITELY a full contact sport, no if, ands, or buts about it. That is the WHOLE point of the game, is to hip check people! (Crazy, I know…) It is a male and female game, but there are WAY more female teams then male, unlike other sports. There are 4 levels of Derby , Junior Derby, Rookie, Intermediate and All-Star. Junior is 10+ in age, 18+ in age is Rookie and all other levels.
Now the explaining of the game:
There are 2 teams; each team has to have these on the track,
1 pivot
1 jammer
3 blockers
A pivot is the one who controls the speed of the “pack” (the pack is the group of girls on the track at once). This is a really important position. The jammer is the one who scores the points. For this position, you have to be quick and fast, and be able to take hard hits. The blockers have the most important job. What they have to do is not let the opposing jammer through the pack to score any points. They want their own team’s jammer through to get the team points. They have to do this for 2 minutes, unless it is called off by the referees. Whoever has the most points at the end of the 1 and a half hour game wins.
And I think that’s about it…
So, do you think this is a (totally!!!!!) awesome game like me, or do you think it is not safe at all (like when all the hip checking happens, and people get hit to the ground, and sometime not being able to get up)???
I want to know!!
My point has been proven! J

i think the game sounds fun! also i think its very unsafe but if it were me i would totally try it out :)
ReplyDelete~ oogady boogady ps: good job **Purple Unicorn** i really enjoyed it!!!!
It is actually a very safe sport. We learn many skills such as safe falling & stops. We also have many rules that must be followed.
ReplyDeleteWe must train and pass a skill test before we are aloud to skate & make contact with other players. We also have to wear a helmet, mouth guard, elbow pads, wrist guards & knee pads.
There is a Greater Edmonton Jr. Roller Derby League, which is for girls 10-17 years of age.
That sounds like fun I would probably like the contact part (I love contact sports) ex. hockey.
ReplyDeleteHockey is a contact sport because of body -checking (which we're not allowed to do yet but we do anyway).

I think this games is the best sport or activity in the whole world Purple unicorn! I would love to play this game. I will ask BIG HAM if we can play it in gym for a while. I would love to be the a jammer in the game.
ReplyDelete-poogibear^^(I think I love this game!)
Sorry, but I don't think they would let us play it in gym!!!!!!
Delete**Purple Unicorn**
I think the game sounds like fun but it could be unsafe. Of course you are wearing safty gear but you could still get hurt, just like riding your bike. You can still fall and get hurt if you are wearing gear safty gear on your bike.
ReplyDeleteBut I think that it sounds like a really fun game.

ReplyDeleteI don't think that sounds very cool. I prefer rock climbing and swimming.
ReplyDelete~~~Khajiit~~~
(P.S: poogibear I DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT think the BIG HAM should let us play in Phys. Ed.)
The game sounds epic!!!!!!!!!!! All though I have never heard of a roller derby I think that it would be fun to be in a roller derby. I would rather do soccer instead of a roller derby. I dont like sports but this really sounds fun. But I will never do a roller derby because if you turn your leg the wrong way you can seriously get hurt that is why you should not compete in it. There is a ton of sports out there and I think that a roller derby is not the type of sport for me.
ReplyDelete~mr.yogi bear~
I think that this would be a verry fun sport. I think I would like it alot
ReplyDelete~meatlover101
I don't know at all what that game is and it is on roller skates. I don't like roller blades because when I fall it jars my back and it huts a lot. So I don't like it for that reason.
ReplyDelete@ Sweetpea @
This a really cool game...but someone gonna get hurt... I think BIG HAM is not gonna allow us to play this kind of game.
ReplyDeleteJhepoy_08
I dont think this is cool just like Khajiit because you said that it is a fun game but also mentioned thart it is dangerous. If it is not hurting people then I can agree with you but it is not a safe game so I am sorry. but I am sure that this game is awsome if it does not hurt anyone.
ReplyDelete-pink GIANT
I think that it sounds like a fun game. One thing that I don't like about it is that you roller skate not roller blade. I wouldn't want to ever get hurt either. I bet I would SUCK at that sport though!
ReplyDelete~Purple Cow~
I think this sport is really cool. And I don't think anybody should say this sport is BAD or DANGEROUS. Because pretty much every sport is dangerous. Like foot ball for example. Foot ball is dangerous but it is also some of people's favorite sport. So I think this sport is good.
ReplyDelete~Green Leprechaun
That game sounds AWSOME!!! I want to play now.
ReplyDeleteI think my two fav about this game is the
hipchecking and the fact you get to ride on
roller skates!
And I have a question,do you play roller dirby
or does someone els?
LOVE: NUMMY NUMMY YUM YUM
I think this sounds like a very fun game!
ReplyDeleteIf I were to play a part thought, I think I would be a blocker. But this game is a little dangerous, I think if we played it in gym COUGH,COUGH POOGI BEAR COUGH,COUGH. Anyway, I think it is a fun game, but dangerous and not for school.
~Purple Bunny
I sort of didn't understand what you just said in there, but I will pretend that I did. Other wise, it sounds like a very interesting sport.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that got me interested in it was the full contact part. Sometimes full contact is fun, but sometimes it isn't fun.The only time that I like it is when I am the one hitting another person.
That is what I think of this sport.
~WILLY WONKA~
The game sounds EPIC!!! I still have not seen a roller derby but it still sounds epic. I would like to compete in one. Bashing into people sounds majior fun!
ReplyDeleteIt would be more epic if you had two jammers and 5 blokers. Also if you get some small blades with rounded tips and shieds it would be even more EPIC!!!!!
~falcon
Purple Unicorn, roller derby sounds like a great activity to try. My first obstacle would be trying to actually stay vertical on rollerskates. I've tried to use rollerskates in the past and the outcome wasn't pretty.
ReplyDeleteI think if I were to play this sport, I would choose the position of jammer. I imagine myself to be small and quick. I don't think, however, that I could survive a big hit from a blocker.
I would love to come out and witness for myself what roller derby looks like in person.

What I am writing right now is to everyone:
ReplyDeleteYES! Roller Derby IS dangerous, but if you learn how to fall, stop and take a hit proparly, being hurt is dwindled down to single digits. Probably... I AM NOT SECOND GUESSING MYSELF! At least I don't think I am...
This is to Nummy Nummy Yum Yum:
Here is the anwsers to you question:
Yes and no. I have only played in one game but my mom (Trauma Mama) Has played in 12, 13 on this Saturday the 16, for Sk8mar, a yearly Christmas 3 header game. (A 3 header game is 3 games in one big caboodle.)
This is to Green Leprechaun:
Thank you!!! I mean, for defending Roller Debry, saying that all sports are dangerous...
My point has been proven! :)
**Purple Unicorn**
oooooooooookay uhhhhh I cant say any thang
ReplyDeleteTHAT IS THE MOST METAL SPORTS EVAR ROFL COPTER ROFL COPTER!!! Yes, but in all seriousness, that does sound like a sport that I could get in to.
ReplyDeleteI remember that one time I was roller skating and then I fell and hit my arm really badly, it wasn't broken, but it still hurt bad. So anyways, the next day I had a thing that was sort of like a cast, but was just a bunch of cloths tied together with an ice pack.
fraqu attack
My opinion for roller derby is that it sounds like fun. It reminds me of a time that I went roller skating when I was turning nine, it was such a blast. This sport does sound thrilling and hard at the same time. But roller derby seems like a full contact sport to me and everybody else should think that it's a full contact sport too. Others may think this is easy, roller skating in circle can be easy, but roller skating in a full contact sport now, that can be hard.
ReplyDeleteRoller derby must take alot of skill to play a game like this, I hope that people will think that roller derby is fun and a full contact sport.
~Small Iahk
Well, I have a qustion for **Purple Unicorn** Has any one you knowen gone to the hospital?!
ReplyDeleteI wanted to go in Roller Derby but my mom says its dangerous. Now for some reason I'm worred. (strange.)
***_turtle lover_***
Yes, people have gone to the hospital. The main question is not IF you get hurt, its WHEN you get hurt.
Delete**Purple Unicorn**
When I hear the word full contact I think of tackling and hurting people. And when I hear roller derby I think of people just playing around and having fun. And when I hear roller derby full contact I think of people coming at each other and bashing into each other or a game of intense game of capture the flag on roller derby. But what's on that post made me think of roller derby full contact a whole different way! And it kind of sounds fun...kind of...I want to try it some time!
ReplyDelete-boodasnip
I think Roller Derby is an amazing sport of very talented people! I'm so happy you've blogged about it to spread the word!!
ReplyDelete:)
I think Roller Derby is a really amazing sport that can help you feel powerful, make lots of friends, and have a whole lot of fun!!
ReplyDeleteThe protective gear that players have to wear helps to keep everyone safe, and the referees make sure that everyone knows and follows the rules.
My favourite thing about derby is that everyone can be good at it because there are so many different positions to play!
I've broken bones in derby, but that can happen in any sport, contact or non-contact. It's the love of the game that keeps bringing me back though, as well as the nonjudgmental atmosphere that comes with derby where people of all shapes, sizes, colors, sexes and age can come together and have fun. This is a sport that promotes acceptance, above all else.
ReplyDeleteRoller derby allows participants to express themselves and is empowering. It accepts all levels of athleticism and body-types. Yes, it is a full-contact sport, but it also requires strategy. Injuries can occur in any sport, and the skaters wear protective gear, but also learn how to correctly fall and hit each other, so as to reduce injuries.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog entry Purple Unicorn!!
This has always sounded like a very exciting sport to me, I think it would be a great way to get fit. And for those of you that are worried about the full contact, broken bones and so on. I have seen people break bones in baseball, biking, football and many other sports in my years. I think it is all in the way you are trained. Thanks for the blog Purple Unicorn!
ReplyDeleteI think it is awesome that you wanted to write about Roller Derby! I also think you are very brave to try Roller Derby! I have been playing for 6 years, and I did break my leg, but it is not any more dangerous than any other full contact sport.
ReplyDeleteI have been to many games (called Bouts) and I have watched the Jr. Roller derby teams play too. It is so wonderful for team building, communication and strategy.
Roller Derby is now becoming more popular with over 1000 teams world wide.
There was just a world cup of Roller Derby in Toronto Ontario, the first ever in the modern era. USA won gold, Canada won silver and England won bronze!
Well, even though Canada won 2nd place, doesn't mean we suck. We rock at Roller Derby. That's right,I SAID IT! I am so glad to see if we make it in to another World Cup. Well, I am a fan of the Roller Derby.
DeleteSpottedpaw over & out.
~spottedpaw
Who is spottedpaw!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I think that is a pretty awesome sport and it sounds hard. I am tempted to try that game it sound dangerous and that makes it fun. Well at least for me lol .I think a lot of young and older kids and get hurt in this game and I think it would be fun to watch .I am exited to read what the other kids right.

I will never compete in a roller durby. NEVER
