Parents, Family & Friends...What Do You Think About Forest 14?

Let's try something different today!

Since social media is becoming increasingly common and an accepted form of writing, it is important to teach students how to use it properly.  Forest 14 was created mainly for students to formulate and voice their opinions on a variety of topics using proper etiquette.  It is hoped that these skills will help them become well-mannered and respectable individuals on any form of social media in the future.

One of the goals of Forest 14 has always been to involve parents, family and friends.  In the past there have been many parents who have contributed their opinions on our topics.

Can we get your involvement again with this topic?  In fact, we only want the opinions of parents, family and friends tonight.

What are your thoughts or opinions about exposing elementary students to social media, particularly blog writing?  Do you think it's too early?  Should we be focusing on other things?  Do you participate in any form of social media?  Feel free to share your opinions.

As all of our students know, everyone can state an opinion respectfully and for the sake of safety, use a screen name to maintain anonymity.  (You can use your child's screen name and put "parent of ....")

Thank you for your contribution to your child's learning.

  1. I believe that it is an appropriate time to introduce students to social media. It will be a bigger part of their lives than we can imagine and they should learn to respect it's power and understand how it functions.

  3. I think it is important to start the introduction early. It is such a huge part of lifestyle now. anything encouraging for our kids to be communicating with one another on a possitive level is a great idea.

  4. The safe environment of an elementary school is a great place to start teaching about internet and social media. I would hope that the dangers of these would also be more clearly discussed to prevent a general trust in "someone" we meet online and befriend.

  6. I think it's the perfect time to learn responsible use of social media platforms, especially since most parents didn't have to deal with social media growing up, and aren't necessarily aware of all the uses, and issues.

  7. Getting to know the ins and outs of safe respectful social media is important from a young age.Just as with the introduction of safe internet use, it is a great idea to set the boundaries while the minds are young!

  8. Since social media is becoming an increasingly widespread form of communication, I believe now is the perfect time to teach our children the appropriate safety and conduct to avoid issues such as online bullying and ignorant responses when addressing public or personal issues. I thank Forest Heights for being vigilante and proactive in noticing these concerns and creating a program to educate before they initiate! Great job!

I think the blog is a great idea and have been enjoying the weekly insight into their thought's and opinions. I don't think it's too early - social media it playing an increasingly important role in our world and it's going to increase more as they get older. While the blog it a safe starting point, it also gives a good opportunity to talk about the good and bad points about the internet - you can make friends/find support but alternatively it also become easy for some to attack behind the cloak on anonymity. It can be a great way to share but alternatively you need to learn protect your privacy too.
