Valentine's Day Cards

Valentine's Day is fast approaching.  In fact, it is a week from today.  Many students have asked whether we are setting aside some time to have a Valentine's Day party as this is what they have been used to in the past.  Unfortunately, due to a number of reasons, we will not be setting aside a specific time to throw a party.

Others have inquired as to whether they can hand out Valentine's Day cards.  Students are allowed to give Valentine's to their classmates and friends, should they wish to do so.  Inevitably, the next question that arises is whether it is necessary to hand out to all the students in the class.

On this topic, I take the same stance that I have maintained throughout my years of teaching.  If you feel that everybody in your class needs to get a Valentine, then feel free to do so.  However, I have never said you have to give to everyone in your class.  I feel that you are now old enough to make your own decisions in that regard.  Think of it like this:  if you throw a birthday party, are you going to invite everyone in the class?  Do you play with all your classmates all the time during recesses?

Some say that it is mean to leave someone out, especially for something little like a Valentine's Day sentiment.  Here's the other side to that statement:  if you don't get one from anybody, what might that say about you as a person?  You might have to take a look at yourself and your own behaviour if people are choosing not to give you something.

Luckily, there are many kind-hearted souls out there who always focus on the good in everybody.

What are your thoughts about Valentine's Day?  Does everybody need to get a card?  Are you making a statement if you only give a card out to certain people?

  1. I really don't like Valentines Day because it just makes me feel sick. First of all everyone is in love and I can't stand that stuff. Second of all, when I was in grade 2 and 3, I had to make a card for everyone. But one day, I had to make homemade cards for at least 30 kids! My thumb was purple for two months and my ring finger was all puffy. I stopped making cards because I feel like kids these days feel like if someone has something they should have it too, which is not right in my opinion.

I don't think it is right to give a card to everybody. I've been told that the occasion was only to give cards to people you want to. This year my sister has to give cards to everyone, AND buy a fruit plate for a special lunch in her hallway. IT WILL DEFINITELY STOP ME FROM GIVING A CARD TO EVERYONE. I will not waste my parents money on some silly card because the person we give it will probably just throw it out.

I used to give out cards all the time. But after my thumb getting purple, I just had to stop.

  2. I think Valentines Day is wonderful because its two days after my birthday and also because of the cards you receive. But I also think that its about love (that's what people say). I like celebrating Valentines Day with my family more because that's what I think all about Valentines is!

I think its a thoughtful thing to do if I give everybody a Valentine card so no one would feel like they're left out! If my teacher had to force me to give out Valentines cards to everybody in the class I would accept it because it feels wonderful in me to give out something and make them feel great in Valentines Day.

I usually give out Valentines Day cards because it makes me think that I'm a kind person and just made someone happy. Deep inside it actually feels great!

  3. I like Valentine's Day but I don't love it. We just basically give out cards. I think there should be more in to it. I still like it and I do give cards too but its just enough.

I think that everyone should get one because how would you feel if someone does not give one to you? If I did not get a card I would not feel bad. On the other side some people feel really bad. REAL BAD!

I usually hand out Valentine's card because I like spending time making cards.

  4. I think Valentine's Day is just another scam to get your money. If you want to show your love you should do it every day not just to be nice for one day. The good part of Valentine's Day is when you're young you can give parents a card and they're happy, but you get chocolate. WIN WIN! I like to call it.

I think you could give it to everybody, but if you don't want to don't. Really I don't care that much because I don't give them at all, but one year I did, but I forgot them. If I give them out I would only give them to my close friends, or someone I like. When my gran or mom make me I don't really care yeah sure I will do it. I prefer homemade cards over bought. It's just more thought.

I sometimes hand out cards and if I do they're homemade. Now I just make them for close people or crushes.

  5. I think Valentine's Day is okay. Valentine's Day doesn't affect me, and I don't really mind it either. It is a nice day for people to get together (even if it's not in a lovey dovey type of way) and respect and enjoy each others time together. I think it's sweet. :)

Valentine's Day is not only a day to respect each other, you can also give out chocolates or gifts to your loved one(s)\close friends. In my opinion, although I used to bring chocolates, I stopped because... well, 1.I'm just lazy. 2. a lot of people don't deserve to get chocolates from me. I'm stuck in this hole with all these people until I 'graduate' from this school. It's not the teachers, it is mostly my classmates. Yeah, it kind of sucks a lot of the time. I think I shouldn't get many, or ANY cards because I am...not...the...best...friend? Wow, that was hard to type. Not all those dots... gosh darn I'm doing it again. The only reason I've survived this long is because I have an attitude, I now realize not many people like it... it's not like I meet the person and automatically start talking smack about them behind their back,(and I don't like to do that to ANYONE) but when I get mad, I don't easily let it go... Like

I said Way earlier, I don't give out candy on Valentine's Day, that stuffs for Halloween.

  6. I don't mind Valentine's Day because everything has to be true love. Girls are a drama if a boy they like didn't give them a Valentine's card, but I know that my friends are not going to do that. And I do like Valentine's Day because I like to laugh when they are a drama queen.

I don't care if people hand out Valentine's card, but if you give one to your friends but not other people don't give it in class. If you only have some for your friends give it when class is over.

I do give Valentine's cards to every one because every one is nice in a different way and if you have lots of Valentines cards left over because you already gave your friends one, give it to the whole class.

  7. I hate Valentine's Day! To me, it is just a normal day. I mean my dad basically buys cards with lolly-pops and makes me hand them out on the day we do that kind of stuff. Like I don't even care it's not a holiday.

I don't think everybody should have to get a card. I mean if I did give then out I would probably only give it my best friend kitkatsmitsmat or none. If I did have to give one out to everybody I would give it to no one at all.

I don't usually hand out Valentine Day card again because I just don't care. When I was younger I did hand them out but I stopped.

  8. I don't like Valentine's Day because its boring and it dosen't mater and you lose a lot of money. It would be better if it was just a normal day because then maybe then I could rent a movie at home.

I think only nobody should get a Valentines Day card because then instead of writing valentines day cards you can just watch TV or games instead.

I usually don't hand out Valentine's Day cards because my brother destroys them all and because its a waste of money and time. Also because its not a special day because you don't even get the day off school.

  9. I love Valentine's Day because the red and love. I think it is great that people gets cards because they explain how good you are. Yes, if my teacher said that I have to give a card to everyone, it stops me from doing it because I don't like to waste the time.

I sometimes hand out cards but I don't want to because it is
    a waste of money.

  10. I think Valentine's Cay can be a waste of time but it depends on which type of people are in your class. If you have MEAN people in your class its a waste of time but if you have NICE people in your class it is not a waste of time.

I think nobody needs to receive a Valentine's card but most people want to receive a Valentine's card because you don't need a piece of paper and some candy to survive. It does not stop me from handing one out since they are nice to receive.

I usually hand out Valentine's cards because I know people love getting candy. Trust me, I know even I like getting candy. I once devoured all the candy in one night. I was lucky I did not get a cavity with eating all that candy.

  11. I think Valentine's Day is amazing because it is romantic. Its the official day of love. It just makes me feel really happy!

I feel the need that everyone should get a card on Valentines Day! I WANT to give everybody a Valentines card because in my world its the thought that counts. I wouldn't care if I got 3 cards and everyone else got 10. Again it is the thought that counts, not how many things you receive.

I ALWAYS hand out cards because it makes me feel amazingly good in a special way.

  12. I think Valentine's Day is the best time because you give cards to your friends or classmates. Also you can bring candy and bring something to your teacher. I think you don't have to bring Valentine Day cards and students still do it sometimes.

It does not stop me when handing them if you are forced to do it.

I usually handed out Valentine's Day cards because my mom buys the supplies and that's a waste of money. At my old school we don't handed out Valentines Day cards because that make me sad quite a lot but I am still happy.

  13. I think Valentine's Day is amazing because it is full of love. And you get to make cards of your chose.

I think giving everybody should get a card. Even if they are not that nice they should get a chance.

I hand them out. WHY? Because I love handing them out. But only if everybody gets one. And at my old school we got a list of everyone's name for cards.

  14. I love Valentine's Day because its about love, candy and butterflies and rainbows. I wish Valentine's Day was every day because we would get to celebrate cupcakes and rainbows all the time. I love being nice to people so I love Valentine's Day.

Even if I had to I or didn't have to give cards to everybody, I still would give one to everybody because I want people to think I'm a good person. I hope I will get some Valentine's Day cards too. I cant wait.

I always hand out Valentine's Day cards. I usually get
puppy valentine cards because they are so adorable.

  15. I think about Valentine's Day it is one of the best time of the year for my opinion and you get to give some cards or something, and people might have good feelings about you. I wish I get to give something to the class.

I think that you don't need to give a card to all the people in the class because maybe you don't have enough. For my own opinion is that everybody don't need to get one, but to be nice I would and I'm going to spend my own money.

I don't usually give cards to people. Its just ways of money for my mom's opinion because some people just breaking it and that made me upset. We put up so much money on it and they would not appreciate what I gave them.

I think everyone should get Valentine cards because it is nice.

I never ever had a Valentine's Day celebrated at school.

  17. Valentine's Day is fine I guess. I don't love it but I don't hate it.

I don't care if every kid gets a card because who cares because they need to learn to not get every thing they want.

I would give a card to everyone because it's not coming out of my wallet. I do hand them out because my mom tells me to.

  18. I personally don't believe that Cupid comes to your house and hides Valentine's Day gifts because I think its your parents.

I think its stupid if you were forced to give one to everyone because some people cant afford it. Yes, if I had to give one to everybody I wouldn't because again you might not be able to buy so many.

Yes, I usually hand out cards because I think its fun.

  19. I HATE VALENTINE'S DAY because it is a waste of time making cards when I can be watching TV, playing my Xbox 360.

  20. I hate Valentines Day because my mom makes me pay for the stuff but when my mom pays for the stuff I love Valentines Day.

I don't have a opinion of everybody having to receive Valentine's cards.

Sometimes I hand out Valentines Cards if I don't pay for them because my mom makes me pay. This year I am not paying.

  21. Every year I give a Valentine Day cards. Sometimes I only make cards for my friends because I don't have enough time to make cards for everybody. In grade one I did not make cards because my mother came and brought chocolate shaped hearts. Only one year that I remember when I didn't make Valentines cards was in grade two. Every year I get a couple of Valentines cards. When I get a little card it makes me feel very happy, and that tells me that some people thought of me. This year, if I finish cards for all my classmates I will give it to the whole class. If I don't finish the cards for all of my classmates, but I made the cards for my friends, I will just give my friends at recces to not make the other upset. I know that this year I should finish the Valentine day cards. There is only one problem. When I have spare time, instead of makings cards, I play a very fun game on the computer that is called City Skyline. (I'm suggesting that game to you, it's fantastic!) The good thing is that I'm not allowed to play that game one hour. Well, it's news for my parents, but for me it's not!

What I think about Valentine day is I'm not a really a big fan of it. Since I come from a Russian family I don't really celebrate Valentine day. For me, Valentine is a ordinary day. Luckily my mom made galupce! That's one of my favourite meal! Galoupse are like cabbage rolls but with rice, juicier and three times bigger! (I had one this lunch)!

I think that having a party at school of Valentine day is silly. I think that my teacher is right about not having a party at the class room because it is a waste of time.

  22. Valentines Day is a scam because it's just a day of romance.

I think everyone does not need one. They need to stop crying over dumb little things. No, being forced to give out to everybody won't change anything because my mom will always force me to give out cards to every one.

I usually hand out cards because my mom forces me to do it.

  23. I love Valentine's Day because you can give out cards and treats and to me it is super nice and it makes me feel good.

To me I want everybody to get a card including kids that are mean to me and my friends cause I am kind-hearted, but being forced to give cards to every kid in the class does not stop me.

I always hand out Valentine's Day cards and the more I give out cards the more I am happy.

  24. Valentines day is pretty stupid because its too pink. The only thing I like about Valentine's Day is just the candy and chocolate.

I sort of like handing out cards and sort of don't because it takes forever to hand them out.

I only hand Valentine's cards when my mom says I have to because she says its kind and in my perspective its not that kind.

In my other school, we also celebrated Valentine's Day which is not cool, just not cool.
