Video Games - Then and Now

In the winter months, there are people who enjoy outdoor activities and people who would rather stay in and be cozy. I am one who enjoys the latter. Actually, playing video games is one of my favourite indoor activities.

I have been playing video games since I was 11 years old. In December of 1991, I got my first console which was a Super Nintendo. Video games were a lot different than today's games. For example, video games were either one or two players back then. You also had to go to your friend's house to play together. Today, you can play video games with friends on the other side of the world thanks to online play.

Another difference is you had to have a physical game cartridge to play a game. When a new game came out, you had to preorder or go to the store to purchase it. Also, you could rent games from a store such as Blockbuster. This was great because it gave you the opportunity to try a game before you bought it. Nowadays, you can purchase the game online and download directly to your console or computer.

I own two gaming consoles or systems, the Nintendo Switch and the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset. Some of my favourite games are Pokémon Violet, Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. I also really love playing Beat Saber for my VR system. One benefit to playing VR video games is that it gets you up and moving.

What gaming consoles or systems do you own? Do you feel you spend too much time playing video games? Do you think kids should play video games or should kids play outside and not virtually? If you don’t play video games, what would be your favourite winter activity?

  1. Great job Mr. Coffee! I really liked all the details you put into that post!

My opinion is that children should be allowed to be on screen if they are really good. If there is a nice parent reading this they should let their kids be on screen for 10-50 minutes if the kids want. I was on Youtube and I saw a video and it said screens don’t ruin your eyes. It's actually because they aren’t getting enough light.

I am allowed as much screen as I want. I have over 22 games. There are Pokemon, Mario and many other ones like Pokemon: Violet, Let’s go Pikachu, Quest and Cafe and for Mario games I play: Bowser's Fury, Super Mario 3d world, Luigi's Mansion 3 and Mario + rabbids spark of hope. And here are the games that don’t fit in the groups: Nyan cat lost in space, Block craft, Minecraft, Plants vs Zombies 1, Temple run, 5 Om nom games, Minecraft dungeons, Mario kart, Animal Crossing, Fruit Ninja and 2 Kirby. I play ALL of those games on a old phone that has no Google and a Nintendo Switch.

And if I get somehow bored, I play with my Pokemon set up and Pokemon action figures. In conclusion I have way too many video games.

  2. Lots of kids love video games, I do too. Every day I come home from school and I go onto my ipad and watch Youtube Minecraft videos for one and a half hours because that's the limit on weekdays. But on weekends I get my ipad for 2 hours. I don't have Minecraft java or bedrock but I CRAVE MINECRAFT!

Sometimes I play these fake Minecraft games on my iPad but they’re okay. My birthday’s coming up in April and I have asked my parents if they can download Minecraft java and bedrock on my computer and they said maybe! I think my parents are going to get Minecraft because I’ve gotten so many books on how to play it that they would know it would break my heart if they didn’t get it. The biggest reasons why I want Minecraft is because I want to solve Minecraft’s scariest mysteries and build a house in the void.

When I'm not on a screen I’m usually reading but since it’s winter, the ice rink by my house should be ready in a bit, and the hills should also be ready soon. I also love watching the Oilers improve their win streak. I have a really good feeling they're going to make the playoffs and maybe even win the Stanley Cup!

  3. I think that if kids play video games for as long as an hour then their eyes will hurt and they probably have a headache. They would be complaining that their eyes hurt their head and ears hurt. The kids would be saying take It away take It away please It hurts my eyes my head and whole body please oh please take it away. Then the parents will take it away for a month and the kids would yell saying that I want my video games back, give It back please I need it please. Then the parents would say okay fine you can have it but you have to not play so much not for a long hour okay.

I have a phone. It Is my mom's old phone but it is still good. I have 3 Minecraft, Youtube, Tik Tok, and other stuff. I have a phone and a giant tablet. I also have a Nintendo Switch, VR headset, PS5, XBox, and two PS4. I have a rule for my phone 1. You can only play on your phone If you are not watching anything on the TV. 2. You can watch it on your phone if you are not watching any Youtube on the tv.

Me and my family are probably going to go skiing, snowboarding and skating. We are going to drink some hot chocolate, S’mores and some chips. I like doing skiing, snowboarding and skating because I get to hang out with my family and have so much fun.

Do you like to hang out with your family?

  4. I think children should play video games. Because it is good exercise for your hands. There might be new words you can learn. There are some video games where you can learn words. In some games you have read to know what it is. You can learn how to play video games.

I play NHL24, Roblox and I watch Youtube. I play those games on my Xbox and watch Youtube on my Xbox. The video games I mostly play are NHL24, Roblox and NHL23. The apps I mostly use are Youtube , Microsoft Edge and Netflix. My favorite game is NHL24.

My favorite winter outdoor activity is ice hockey. My favorite indoor activity is to hibernate and play video games. After playing video games I watch Youtube. On the weekends I go to my friend’s house. We play mini sticks at my friend's house.

  5. Great post, Mr. Coffee! This is an interesting topic that comes up all the time,

I think there should be a balance when it comes to children and video games. Parents need to set limits on how much time they allow their children to spend playing or watching screens. Experts recommend that kids under the age of six should not be watching any screens. It breaks my heart when I am shopping or eating at a restaurant and see toddlers (2 or 3 years old) clutching a phone with their eyes glazed over. I also think that some video games that children play are too violent for them. This prolonged exposure will have an effect on their brains and not necessarily in a positive way.

I play some video games on my phone. They are called Puzzles and Spells (Harry Potter themed), Toon Blast, Homicide Squad, Crime Mysteries, Rooms and Exits, Solitaire, and a variety of bingo games. Wow, that's a lot. I notice that I waste a lot of time on my phone. My husband owns an XBOX Series X and he enjoys a lot of role-playing games like Diablo IV, and Skyrim. He also enjoyed playing the Witcher series.

One of my favourite winter activities is to turn on the fireplace and settle into a good book. I enjoy reading so much but haven't done much of it lately. I can't even say that I have no time. I have lots of time. I just have to stop playing games on my phone and make reading a priority.

  6. I love video games but I’m more of a TV person, which means I’m more likely to watch TV shows like Brooklyn 99. I do play games though. We got a Nintendo Switch for Christmas from mom and dad. I don’t play a lot of games that kids my age play like Roblox, Minecraft, Fortnight, or Among Us. That is my choice to not play these games. I think it would build an unbreakable bond with the games or maybe a bit more violence in my life.

But the first thing I do after school is grab the Nintendo Switch from the console and take it to my bedroom to play Super Smash Bros. or take it downstairs to play Just Dance. We have more games on it but I only play those two games. I also have some games on my mom’s old phone. The only problem is that it can not download any more games on it. I play Pazu World on it because I can’t download Toca Boca World for some reason. My favorite game is on my Nintendo Switch. It’s called Just Dance 2024 edition. I might not be better than my sister (which annoys me) so I play alone when I get home

I also like to draw and go outside in the snow. I also love to clean which most don’t. Drawing helps me practice to get better. I also like to build things in the snow like a mini snowman or women then break it and repeat. I also love to listen to Brooklyn 99 while cleaning. Ya that’s right, I have watched Brooklyn 99 so many times that I just need to listen to know what is going on.

  7. I think kids should not be playing games because playing video games affects your mental health such as your brain and eyes. The light of the games damages your eyesight and also it hurts the electricity bill. You can do all sorts of things like shopping, walking, and going to a restaurant. Maybe for like 20 minutes would be a fair amount of time on a console. I usually watch tv. I'm not a big games fan myself. Kids can still see some of the game when they get off of the game. That is the perfect example of too much screen time. To be honest I used to go on my phone for the whole day. My tv is my console. Well, I have a lot of consoles but I barely play it anyway. I watch YouTube more than anything else.

I play Rec Room. Rec room is a game where you can play other games in it. You can customize your avatar. You also don’t have to pay for it because it's completely free. You can also get money for the game without paying. I have too many gaming consoles like PS5, PS4, PS Pro, XBox 1, XBox 360, XBox 3, XBox series X, Vr headset, Nintendo Switch, and an iphone.

I'm more of an indoor person myself. I like knitting, it makes me calm and all that stuff. I like drawing. It feels nice and soothing.

Thank you Mr. Coffee for that opinion.

  8. We come inside the house. Trudging behind one another with heavy winter clothing. snow pants, jackets, toques (winter hats), mittens or gloves. All of us purposely bump and crash onto the couch, winter has begun and you have a choice to either stay indoors or play outside.

Some people think that kids should not be playing video games and should be playing outside but I’m a mix of both, but a little bit more on the video games side. Here in the 21st century there are babies who can not even talk and have phones. I am okay with kids playing educational games on their mom’s phones, but it’s crazy for 1 year olds to be streaming on Tik Tok and Youtube on their own phones! Tik Tok is for 16+ but kids younger than 6 use it. I think that once you are older than 7 years old you can stop playing educational games on your mom’s phone, but you should have a balance for screen time.

The games that I like playing are Kick the Buddy on my Ipad, Mario kart 8 deluxe on my Switch, and Roblox, and many other games. If I'm not doing that on my Ipad then I’m either scrolling through Youtube shorts (not Tik Tok!) or learning French on Duolingo. Kick the Buddy is a mobile game for people with problems like anger issues or anxiety. And things like that. Basically you beat up this character called Buddy, and get rewards to beat him up even more. You also feed, dress him, and take him to the washroom. Not that I have anger issues, but sometimes it’s fun to just let out your anger.

One winter activity that I enjoy doing is playing in the snow. It just feels really peaceful lying down in the snow waving your arms while catching snowflakes on your tongue. If you are properly dressed, and if you have an imagination like most kids, playing with snow is like playing with white fluffy, and sometimes hard building blocks, pencils for drawing on walls, or arrows for target practice. Building blocks to make snowmen, ice sculptures, or forts for war, pencils because you can mush the snow in between the cracks on brick walls or right on top of it you can make a drawing or to write a secret message. The ice sculpture idea might seem crazy, but if you draw something like a really thick heart, if it’s Canada cold then you can just pick up a bottle of water and pour the water on the drawing, it will turn into an ice picture instead of a snow one.Trust me it’s pretty cool. For archery, you just pick a snowball, back up, and throw it against the brick wall. The higher the better. There are many other activities but those are my favorite ones. What are yours?
