What I Remember About My Last Two Christmases

When I was seven years old ,and it was almost Christmas I was getting so excited. I would ask my dad almost everyday after school if I could open a gift. He would say, "No!!! It's not Christmas yet!" I would get mad and walk away, but I could still understand why, because it was just not Christmas yet. When Christmas day finally came I almost forgot. When I realized what day it was, I jumped out of my bed, ran down the hallway, sat on the floor and grabbed a gift to open. It was a Nintendo 3DS! I screamed out YES!!!! because I had been asking for this all year. My dad was a little bit upset because I hadn't even waited for my parents to sit down.

When I was eight I waited until Christmas Eve to ask if I could open a gift. My dad said, "Yes, only one." So I picked one that had a funny shape and it was a nail polish kit. It was ok. That christmas I woke up in the middle of the night and was so excited I stayed awake until morning. When my dad got up he saw me sitting on the couch watching TV. I started asking if we could start opening gifts and he said, "Yes." The first gift I opened was a tablet, I cried and laughed at the same time. I sure wish I would have picked that one the night before.

What do you remember from your last two Christmases?

A Dead Mouse

Have you ever seen a dead mouse in your house?  I have!

There was a mouse in my house and it was really bothering me because it escaped the first time.  The mouse was brown and pretty big.  It grossed me out.  One day I set a trap and the mouse got the cheese from the trap.  I was sitting on my couch and my younger brother started yelling, “A dead mouse!  A dead mouse!”

I looked right beside me and saw the dead mouse.  It was disgusting.  I tried to tell my mom but she was sleeping and she said to just leave it there. Then I told her it was on the couch.  My mom looked at it. Its head was still in the trap and it was all slimy and wet.  It was wet because my dog, Maggie, was chewing it.  My mom said it got stuck in the trap and crawled underneath the door and that’s when my dog got it.  We eventually threw it in the garbage.  That was one of the most disgusting things ever.
Have you ever found a dead mouse on the couch?

Blue Sheets

What do you think of the blue sheets that we get every week?  I think it is cool because it is a very good way to learn our spelling words.   If we hand them in all the time we can get a free lunch at Subway or something else.  Last year there was seven kids that got to go because they handed their blue sheets in.  Do you think that you will go and be one of the seven?  Do you or do you not like them and why.

They’re fun sometimes but if you don’t do a good job at them she will read them out loud and that will be embarrassing.

There was a kid that never handed in her blue sheets.   Then one day she did all of her blue sheets.  That was a mountain!  It was an inch of paper off the ground.

Do you think it is okay to not do your blue sheets?

Sickness, Late & Staying Home From School

Have you ever stayed home because you weren't well enough to attend school?  Our class had pretty good attendance towards the beginning of the year with many days of "Perfect Attendance."  Lately, there have been days where we have had many students absent for any number of reasons.  Also, we have had many other students attend late everyday.

Throughout my school career, I can count on ONE hand the number of days I've missed school because of illness.  That includes four years of university.  I grew up with parents who made me attend school.  I wouldn't have been able to get away with not going to school, nor did I want to.  However, it seems like these days students miss school for even the slightest reasons.  Now I completely understand being sick and not being able to come to school.  I wouldn't be able to concentrate either if my nose is stuffed with snot and I'm tired all the time.

But I've heard that sometimes students are allowed to stay home from school "just because" their parents are giving them a day off.  Or sometimes, there are students that don't attend because they are on vacation DURING the school year.

Another topic that has to do with attendance is students who show up late.  Now of course, there are always circumstances where we are late because of traffic or we slept in or the alarm didn't go off.  These are very valid reasons and they can happen once in awhile.  What concerns me is the number of lates.  There are students that come in late EVERYDAY.  Why does this happen?

What is your perspective on these topics?  In your blog response, answer the following questions:

1.  Have you ever missed school because of any reason?  How long did you miss and for what reason(s)?  Do you ever wonder about students who miss all the time?

2.  Have you ever been late to school and for what reasons?  Does this happen to you all the time?  Do you ever wonder why students are late all the time?

3.  Do you think it's alright for students to miss school because of vacation or just having "a day off?"  Have you ever been allowed to do this?  Why did you miss?

Amsterdam

At the beginning of July, my family went to Europe.  We spent one week in Amsterdam and five weeks in Russia.  My dad didn’t go to Russia because it was too much money.  Still it does not matter.

We flew from Edmonton directly to Amsterdam.  The flight was about eight hours long.  When we arrived we took a train to our hotel. I think that it took half an  hour or maybe even an hour.  I was tired because the plane was LOUD plus I only slept one hour.

The hotel was really cool;  there were two beds, a table, bathroom, coffee-maker for my dad, and a window that shows the town.  I saw the planes go by and I wondered, where did come from?

When we were in the beautiful park my dad wanted to see the “Van Gogh's Museum!”  My mom bought tickets and we went inside the museum.  It wasn’t that big, but it looked very, very beautiful!!!  Then we went to a different museum that was bigger than ever.  It was the pretties in the whole world because the pictures were so famous!!!    It seemed like it was a trap but finally we finished.  It wasn't a trap after all!!!   That’s our amazing nice trip!

Have you ever gone away on vacation?  Describe your vacation.  Have you ever travelled to either Amsterdam or Russia?  Where else have you gone?

I Care

In my school it is Caring month in October.  On the announcements we watch different videos which shows us many ways to care.  For example, some videos show us actions, and some show us words.

One of my favourite videos was a little kid showing 20 different things we should say more often.  One of the phrases was saying "thank you" more often as well as "you're welcome."

Caring is good because it teaches kids to be nice and people will want to play with them.

Here are more examples of what do to be caring. Give a hug to your friends and family too. Tell friends and family you care and like them by giving a compliment.

What do you think about the theme Caring in October?  I think it's awesome.  What is your favourite part about it.  Which videos do you like the best.  Why do you think students should know to care?

My Fish

This is my memory about when my fish tank started leaking.

One day I woke up and went to feed my fish and there was water all over my dresser. I said to my dad my fish tank is leaking. He said what do you mean? I said there is water all over my dresser. That night my dad put a towel around the tank. Then he said to me don’t worry about it and I said ok.

The next night my dad brought a bucket in from the garage and asked if me and my grandma could clean it. We said yes so we went to the sink and cleaned the bucket.

About 20 minutes later my dad put some rocks, shells even the little boat in the bucket then he put the fish in the bucket then it was only 8:00 so I played on my tablet for a while but then I had to go to bed.

The next day my dad went to Canadian Tire and bought aquarium sealant and a razor blade and started scraping the old sealant off the tank and when he was done he put the new sealant on the tank. It took about a night to dry. My fish aren't back in the tank yet but my dad is working on it.

Have you ever had a pet that you had to rescue or take to the vet? What kind of pet do you have?

Books

This week is Read-In Week at our school.  Today, our secretary came and read her son’s favourite bedtime story, Remembering the Lusitania.  She said that everybody remembers the sinking of the Titanic but people rarely remember this one.  She loves to read the book because the words really made the story come alive.

I know that you can get bored of books however books can be entertaining.  People read to learn and for fun.

I have lots of favourite books. For example, Dear Dumb Diary, Monster High, Ever After High and Wonder.

There are many kinds of books to choose from to read.  In the library you will find chapter books, magazines, hard cover, soft cover and much much more.

What kind of book are you reading?  Fiction, non fiction - a book about reptiles maybe?
What are your thoughts on the choices we have in our Library for reading?  I love reading do you?  What are your favourite books?

Super Moon Lunar Eclipse - September 27, 2015

Yesterday, many were able to witness the scientific phenomenon of a super moon lunar eclipse, also known as a blood moon.  Around 8:11 p.m. in Edmonton, many were able to watch as the Earth cast its shadow on a full moon and eclipsed it.  As a result, the moon appeared to have a red glow.

Scientists say that this combination of a super blood moon and a lunar eclipse is a rare occurrence that has not happened for 30 years and will not happen again until 2033.  According to NASA, the next total lunar eclipse will be on January 31, 2018.

Unfortunately, I did not see this super moon on September 27, 2015.  Did you happen to see it?  Describe what you saw in detail.  What do you think about having witnessed something that will not happen again until 2033, that's 18 years!

What's So Great About a Blog?

I started Forest 14 five years ago as a class project.  I thought it would allow students another opportunity to state their opinions and have a voice on a variety of topics.  Also, it has been neat to see Forest 14's pageviews grow even greater each year.  We are now at almost 45 000 pageviews which includes views from such faraway countries as the Ukraine, Spain and the Philippines.

Some of my students dread blog day because they know they have to write at least three paragraphs in response to the post.  Because I expect that grammar and spelling be correct, some students try to write as little as possible with the hopes that they can "get away" with it.

As students move forward into the world of technology, social media as such Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat are going to be tools that they use, whether parents like it or not.  My goal is to teach students how to use these tools properly and respectfully so that they can be responsible citizens on the Internet.  That includes using a screen name to block their identity.

What do you think about having to write and respond on a blog?  Do you think it is important to learn how to respond correctly on social media sites?  If you were Blogger of the Week, what topic would you write about?

The Talent Show

What do you think about the talent show? There are tons of people who have lots of talent, but they are too scared to perform in the talent show. I think they should just go ahead and do it! Really, it’s just singing a song or dancing or doing a magic act for two or three minutes!

I’m in the talent show, but only because my friends made me. Right now, I’m kind of glad, because I couldn’t really write about the talent show if I wasn’t in it! To be honest, if my friends had not made me, I would never have screwed up the courage to even try out!

When I'm watching people on stage, if it's a song I know I feel like singing along but I don't because it's their spotlight and I don't want to take it away. For some people who think they have talent but don't, I feel really embarrassed for them because they could be making fools of themselves. However, it's still really courageous of them to go up on stage and perform.

What’s your talent? Are you entering the talent show this year? Have you ever entered the talent show?

Last Day of School

I think the last day of school will be amazing this year.

I am usually excited on the last day of school because tomorrow is summer vacation. We get to do something exciting (ex. go to the waterpark) and no borrrrrrrrrrrriiiiinnngggg school work (some school work is fun but other school work is boring).

Last year before we went to a waterpark our teacher allowed us to watch a movie and eat chips.  This year The Big Ham told us that we might be going to Jackie Parker waterpark.

What do you think we should do on the last day of school?  Do you feel happy about the last day of school or sad?  I feel happy and sad.  I feel happy that there is no more school until September.  I feel sad because I usually don’t get to spend any more time with my teacher.

I have one more question do you think we should reward our teacher?

Current Events - Do They Matter to You?

All year I have tried to talk to my students about some current events in Alberta that may be of importance to them.  We focus mainly on news stories such as government changes, fossil finds and the occasional tragedy.

Growing up my family had a newspaper subscription to the Edmonton Journal and we always watched the 6 o'clock news.  I didn't have access to the Internet so if I wanted to see what was happening in the world I had to read the newspaper or watch the news.

Students today have the luxury of news on demand.  That is, they can search up yesterday's news or even breaking news just by typing in a few keystrokes on the keyboard.  With this kind of access then, it seems to me that kids would be caught up on all sorts of news in their community.  A poll of my class though indicates otherwise which made me curious.

Do current events even matter to children these days?  Are children more concerned with what celebrities and superstars are doing instead of what's happening right in their province?  Why don't children access current events?  Lastly, what has been the event that has been most memorable this year?

Parents

Have you ever wondered why parents do and say all this stuff that makes no sense? I have. It all seems very random! For example, what does it mean when parents say, “An apple a day keeps the docter away!” The only way that an apple can keep the doctor away is if it can block his door, which will not happen.

Another weird thing about parents is their craving for coffee! (Ok, even people who are not parents drink coffee, and some parents don’t drink coffee, but I’m talking about the ones who do)!  Every morning, my mom needs a cup of coffee to transform herself from a zombie/vampire into a butterfly that can barf up rainbows. Kind of like coffee is the key to her momamorphasis. It’s weird.

Sometimes my mom does make some sense! Like when she said, “Like water and a duck’s back, you must not  let other people’s insults get into you.” She’s so wise.  Then there’s the times when she says something totally bizzare, like “This song reminds me of cherry doughnuts!” or “DRIVE, MAN, DRIVE!!! @&$%*!!!! PHLWAAAAAA!!!”
It’s so strange.
What weird and wise things do your parents say? Do you know what they mean? Do they love coffee?

Is School Work too Easy?

Do you think school work is hard because sometimes I think it is really easy.  Even you don’t want to admit it then it is okay. Math is one of the most hardest things in school for some people and other things that are hard for some people in random order are:

1.Gym
2.Typing Club on the Chrome book
3.Sometimes Mathletics
4.Science
5.Social

One of my favourite subjects is Math because it makes you think about things you already know or didn’t know.  Some other of my favourites are

1.Gym
2.Typing Club
3.Mathletics
4.Math

Sometimes I think that school work should be easier for us and some things harder like Social, Science,Health and Gym because they are seriously easy in so many ways and probably for some other people also like ediblepaper and fatblockofcheese and other people.

Sometimes in my spare time I work on Math if I need to or if I have nothing to do I doodle and draw and sometimes draw random math problems and solve them.

Do you think school work is hard or easy and why? What do you think should be easier and harder and why.  Describe what you would like to be the same. What are some of your favourite things in school?

Vacation

Have you ever taken a vacation to a place outside of Canada?

I have been to Jamaica and Mexico.  I went to Jamaica in January and Mexico in March for ten days each time. I had a lot of fun at both places and was very sad to have to return to Edmonton.

In Jamaica I jumped off a cliff and a waterfall that is a 300ft cliff. I was scared at first but it was fun. At first it looked really scary because the person told me that if I jumped off the wrong way, my life jacket could come off and I could drown! But my Mom did it first and then I went down because I saw that she was okay. Except I was worried about her because she wasn't wearing a life jacket. Did you ever jump off something in your life?

In the summer my mom and I are going to Ontario and then we will go to see some family.  I think we will have fun there.

Also, I would like to go to Paris which is in France. I would love to see the Eiffel Tower. I think it will be cool if I was going to Paris because it would be nice.

Do you like taking vacation? Tell me one of your vacations. If you have never been you can tell me one vacation that you want to go on.

I have been to:
1. Mexico 5 times
2. Jamaica 1 time

Are you going on vacation this summer?

Bottled Waters

I drink bottled water  because they have some strange tastes and some normal.  And yes I know that tap water is free and all but bottled water has a better appearance.  I know that drinking bottled water is harmful to the environment because it’s creating garbage and putting more items in a landfill.  Oh no :o ! They  also cost a lot of money for a drink.

There are so so so sooooooo many different types of bottled waters such as:

1.Happy Water
2.Dasani
3.Black Water
4.Fiji

Anyway I, candyruls5, believes that Happy Water is my fit :D

So have YOU ever heard or even tried any of these waters?  If so what was your favourite or which one do you want to try? And just if you are wondering about Black Water, well IT DOES EXIST!

So what are your thoughts of water?  Do you think that they all taste different or the same?

Running

I love running because it is very fun.  I usually run for fun but sometimes for competitive.

Last Saturday I ran a race for a church, well it was not just me, it was my cousin Arielle, my mom, my sister and last but not least, my aunty.  It was very fantastic.  Me, my mom and Arielle, ran 5 km! Well we didn't run it all, we ran, walked, ran, walked. It was very tiring we ran most of it.  My sister and my aunty walked the 3 km.  My time for the 5 km run was around 45 minutes.

I also ran for the school Running club which was also very exciting.  At first I did not want to do it but then my friend, the big puppy, insisted me to do it, so I did.  It was very cool because me and the big puppy got to pass the baton to each other during the relay race. Well, I passed the baton to her.  I think next year I will do it again.

Would you join the Running Club? Do think running is fun?

Fear

Have you ever been afraid of something that is really not scary but to you it is really scary. Like for me this is a list of stuff that I am afraid of:

  1. Penguins
  2. Spiders
  3. Barf
  4. Sometimes my friend, thepinkgirl
  5. And last, my friend electricrazor eating chips.

Those are the things that scare me so bad but the last one just creeps me out, alot!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes alot!!

What could you be scared of? Spiders, bugs, barf or something else? Just think of it.

Just what are you afraid of and also maybe your dad in underwear (the most scary thing in the universe). Even I have seen the wild beast in his (do not need to now) habitat of death.
Here is a tip: when you wake up cover your eyes but just enough to see the wild beast in his (do not need to know) habitat. Lock your eyes or else you will get dadatized (do not get it or it will spread).

Math

I love math, do you? It is really fun to to do math, but other people hate math and some love it like me. I don’t know why people hate math at all.

The only thing that I know why people hate math is because they are too lazy to do homework and they just want to play video games or play outside all day.

The math that I like is multiplication and division. I like them because you get to memorize a song or memorize the whole times table.

Here’s a list of things why I like math.

1.  I am really good at math.

2.  Its really fun and easy.

3.  We get to do new things.

One thing I don’t like about math is the graph paper, I hate it because I hate putting one number or letter per box.

My question is why don’t you like math? Do you like math?  Tell me.

French Plays

I think the French play was really fun.  I was really nervous when I was acting but it was okay in the end.  There was a lot of people watching and I didn't want to mess up my lines. I think it was cool even though you may not have known what they were saying.  We heard stories like:

1: The Three Little Pigs
2:  L’Arbre Ungali (a tree story)
3:  Louis La Grenouille (a frog story).

Here are some questions:

1:  Did you understand it?
2:  Did you like it?
3:  What was your favourite part?

My favourite part was the grade six play and our play (the grade 4 play). I played the third pig who liked to dance. I owned the house of bricks and obviously, it did not fall down.

Did your family like it when they were watching or if they didn’t, do you think they would like it?  Were you excited to watch the French play or would you rather watch trained actors act in English?

I was excited for the French play and I also like normal plays.  Some people find it weird for other people in the school to speak French.  Probably because they’re not used to it.  If you speak French then it would be cool to hear the stories and understand it.

Smoking

Smoking is bad for you.  The first reason is it can damage your lungs.  Second of all you get cancer.  Third thing is your teeth turn yellow.

I don’t know if they will stop making them one day.

I tell my dad to stop but he won't but he said he will stop next year which is long time away. Ask your dad if he will stop smoking. If not you're dad could end up in the hospital. I wonder if your dad smokes? Yes or no? Answer it.

You have a choice:

1) Yes

2) No

3) NEVER!!!
When you're older and you smoke its going to end badly, okay? If you don’t smoke like me you won’t end up getting cancer.   If you smoke and you do it once you can’t stop smoking if you like it. Don’t do it please.  Please do not smoke, okay?

Jobs

What job do you want to have when you grow up?

I know I want to be a veterinarian when I grow up because I want to help animals. I don’t know if I should be a veterinarian or a doctor or even a brain surgeon. The only problem with being a brain surgeon is you can save the person… or just kill them. One wrong move you will kill them plus you will need to go to school for like twelve years!!!

First you need to go to medical school then become a doctor then become a surgeon and then you need to find a doctor who will teach you the proper way of saving a person. And that is why I want to be a veterinarian. That way I can go into the open world sooner and not stay in school until I am like 36!!! Then I will be old and not young anymore.

There is lots of jobs that you do. Most people just have a job just so they can get money. But I am different. I will do it for money but mostly because I want to save peoples lives or animals lives.

A job is also an opportunity to do something with your lives. My mom always tells me do good in school, get good grades so you can get a good job and not work in Mcdonalds mopping the floors.

So what job do you want to have and why? Is it to get money or is it to help someone or save someone?

Spring Break - Two Weeks?

Having just come back from Spring Break, most of us are refreshed and ready to begin the last three months of school.  Believe it or not, April, May and June will fly by so quickly that it will be the last day of school before you know it.

Did you know there are some schools that get TWO WEEKS off for Spring Break?!?  These students got off a week before we did and then returned the same day as us (April 7).  You're saying to yourself aloud or in your head: Two weeks?!  That's not fair!  But students, as I have taught you in Science you can't get something for nothing.  Although this is not a force-distance trade-off, it is a trade-off.  In order to get two weeks at Spring Break, these students work on a modified calendar and start school in the middle of August.  That's right, August.  Hmm.

Imagine what you could do with two weeks off though.  That's enough time to go on a holiday without feeling guilty that you're missing out on school.  It's enough time to clean your room everyday for 14 days, 336 hours, 20 160 minutes or 1 209 600 seconds!  Wow, that's a lot of time.

Here's the big question then: would you be willing to trade losing a couple of weeks from summer vacation in August to gain a couple of weeks for Spring Break?

Keep in mind that the weather in the last weeks of August is pretty much guaranteed to be warm and sunny.  The weather during late March is unpredictable.  We could get two weeks off and it could be raining those entire two weeks.  If that's the case, then I'd rather keep all of my summer.

What are your thoughts?

Parents, Family & Friends...What Do You Think About Forest 14?

Let's try something different today!

Since social media is becoming increasingly common and an accepted form of writing, it is important to teach students how to use it properly.  Forest 14 was created mainly for students to formulate and voice their opinions on a variety of topics using proper etiquette.  It is hoped that these skills will help them become well-mannered and respectable individuals on any form of social media in the future.

One of the goals of Forest 14 has always been to involve parents, family and friends.  In the past there have been many parents who have contributed their opinions on our topics.

Can we get your involvement again with this topic?  In fact, we only want the opinions of parents, family and friends tonight.

What are your thoughts or opinions about exposing elementary students to social media, particularly blog writing?  Do you think it's too early?  Should we be focusing on other things?  Do you participate in any form of social media?  Feel free to share your opinions.

As all of our students know, everyone can state an opinion respectfully and for the sake of safety, use a screen name to maintain anonymity.  (You can use your child's screen name and put "parent of ....")

Thank you for your contribution to your child's learning.

Sports

I love sports because I really like to be active, and in my free time I like to play with others in a team. I play soccer almost every day. I play at recess and I play on a German team as a forward. Our team won gold in a tournament. I play both indoor and outdoor soccer. The indoor soccer season is over and I am already playing outside. My team is called Werder Bremen.

But in the winter I play hockey most of the time. I play on the tarmac and during intramurals. I played for the Wasabi Nuggets and we got to play the teachers in the final. We lost 5-4. It was a fun game.

I like sports because I am an athlete, and I like to run and kick a ball around.

What do you like to play in the winter and in the summer? Do you like other sports too, like:

1.snowboarding or skiing.
2.floor hockey.
3.basketball.
4.baseball.
5.football.

My favorite sports are soccer  hockey and snowboarding. Do you have a favorite sport?, If not then what would it be and why is it your favorite sport? Are you even a person that likes sports? If you don’t like sports what else do you do for a hobby in your free time?  Do you have another sport you would like to share with me? It does not have to be your favorite sport. It can be any sport you like.
What is your favorite sport and why? Do you like sports?

Food

Do you like food or a  particular food because I like food a lot.  If you have a particular favourite food tell me.  My top three FAVOURITE foods are probably:

1. Pork
2. Steak
3. Bacon

A lot of other things as well. For Instance I always ask my mom for bacon wrapped lasagna and bacon wrapped pork or...bacon wrapped anything . I also really like pork with… APPLESAUCE! I think its good. You should try it. What are your three favourite foods and other foods?

I think my dad makes the best homemade burgers EVER! Even ask my friend "fatblockofcheese." She has tried them. I also think my dad makes really  REALLY good steak, even ask my little sister.

What is your favourite side - french fries with potatoes?   Or some salad with ranch or some three cheese ranch or whatever you want. My favourite side is probably mashed potatoes or french fries or something like that.

Desserts! Now we all like desserts. My favourite desert  is probably I don't know because I like all dessert. But I think my mom makes really good brownie pudding. What is that you ask? It's a very awesome thing. Me and my dad think it tastes like a little bit of heaven.   I Also really like “HEAVEN” with whip cream. It tastes GREAT! What is your favourite dessert and why?
